FAILURE TO ACCOUNT
Former Insurance Agent
Having admitted failure to account to the Colouial Mutual Assurance Society Company, Ltd., for sums of £8 14/- and £2l/18/-, Aliehael Betle Maher, salesman, aged 47, was admitted to 18 months’ probation by Mr. AV. F. Stilwell, S.M., in the Magistrates’ Court, AVellington, yesterday, and was ordered to repay the money. Detective-Sergeant P. Doyle said Maher was engaged on February 25 as an agent for the company and his duties consisted of collecting weekly premiums and writing new business in Petone. At the end of the first week he failed to call at the office as arranged. When he was visited at his residence he admitted he had used the money to pay personal liabilities, being quike frank to a detective. He was a single man with one previous conviction.
In giving his decision the magistrate remarked that it was 10 years since accused had been in trouble previously.
