SUCCESSFUL YEAR

Elizabeth McCombs Club

The first meeting for the year of the Elizabeth McCombs Club, Wellington, took the form of a social gathering, and was an outslanding success. The general meeting was held in February, when Mrs. Doris Palmer was congratulated on her appointment as a Justice of the Peace, and Mrs. Hansen received the good wishes of members on her seventy-eighth birthday. It was decided that as soon as possible a room would be secured as a centre for the club activities. The annual general meeting was held on March 14. Officers were elected as follows: President, Mrs. C. Fellowes; vice-presidents, Mesdames Black and Martin ; secretary, Mrs. M. Hamond; treasurer, Mrs. M. Shepherd ; executive, Mesdames Blake, Cqok, Tunzeiman, Collins and Reid. The secretary’s report showed that membership for the year had increased, and that the finances of the club were in a most healthy condition. ( There was an interesting report from the eugenics group. To assist members in the study of problems affecting the mother and child many educative addresses by people who were authorities on the various subjects had been given. Speakers included Mrs. Beagle-, hole, on the psychological study of tbo primitive child. A resume of the work of the Society for the Protection of Women and Children was given by Mrs. Dallard; the work of the Child Welfare Department was explained by Mrs. K. Masters, and a talk ou the kindergartens was given by Mrs. Dowsett.

Members of the discussion nod debating group have worked very conscientiously during the year, and have benefited greatly from the experience gained.

The home and garden group have been very active and untiring in their efforts to raise funds. The drama group has attracted many new members and much progress was shown. Mrs. Stewart, M.P., tlie retiring president, said that because of her Parliamentary duties it would be difficult for her to take a very active part in the club. She assured members that she was a firm believer in the club, and that by being a member of such an organization she was the richer in friendships and also in knowledge.

As a token of love and esteem Mrs. B. Reid presented Mrs. Stewart with a dainty shoulder spray and on behalf of executive members presented her with a beautiful gold brooch in appreciation of the excellent services rendered by her to I lie club. Mrs. Stewart installed the new president, Mrs. C. Fellowes, who appealed for support and co-operation, and said she would always work in the best interests of the club. Thanks were extended to the secretary, treasurer, and auditor, for their services to the club. Going Abroad Miss A. Kent-Johnston and Miss Muriel Smith, Papatoetoe, will leave Auckland at the end of the month for Wellington, where they will connect with the Aniwa for a six mouths’ visit to England. Mrs. Alexander, New Plymouth, left on Tuesday to spend a holiday in Honolulu.
