WEATHER SITUATION
South-westerly Change Following is the weather report and the forecast for winds and seas issued by the Meteorological Office, Wellington, for the 24 hours ending 3 p.m. today:— General situation: Pressure remains rather high to the north, while a shallow depression is crossing the southern portion of the South Island. Forecast.—Winds: Rather variable at first with north-westerlies to westerlies predominating, but a change to south-westerlies advancing from the south. Force light to fresh. Seas (New Zealand waters) : Rather rough at times in parts of the Cook and Foveaux ‘Straits areas, but otherwise slight to moderate. Eastern Tasman Sea: Light to fresh northerly to north-westerly winds, but a change to southerlies advancing from the west. Seas slight to moderate. (General forecast appears above leading article.)
YESTERDAY’S WEATHER
Wellington: The morning was fine and sunny, but the afternoon cloudy. A moderate breeze blew from the north and the temperature was mild._ Maximum temperature yesterday, 71.7 degrees ; minimum temperature Sunday night, 57.2 degrees; temperature at 3.30 p.m., 65 degrees; barometer reading at 3.30 p:m„ 29.997 inches. Palmerston North: Fine and overcast during the day. Light rain began to fall toward evening and continued at night. Masterton: Sunny, with quickly passing cloud and a faint northwesterly breeze. Wanganui: Overcast with a moderate westerly wind. The barometer reading at 4.30 p.m. was 30.10 inches. Napier and Hastings: Fine and hot during’’ the morning, a slight haze developing toward mid-afternoon; light to moderate easterly breeze. Waipukurau: Another extremely hot day with a maximum temperature of 81 degrees. The barometer was falling slowly, the reading being 30.03 inches.
Auckland: Fine with clouds, the wind being moderate from the northwest. The maximum temperature was 74 degrees. The barometric pressure was steady with a reading at 5 p.m. of 30.12 inches.
Christchurch: Fine but overcast with a light east-north-east breeze. The maximum temperature was 61 degrees. The barometer fell slowly to 29.93 inches at 5 p.m. Dunedin: Overcast, but the sun shone at. intervals and temperatures were mild, the maximum being 62 degrees. The barometer fell slightly, the reading being 30.06 inches at 5 p.m.
