WOMAN FACES GAMING CHARGE
Decision Reserved Dominion Speciai Service WANGANUI. March *2O. Freda Mary Lawson, a single woman. Wanganui, was charged in tile Magistrates’ Court, Wanganui, today with keeping a common gaming house at premises in Glasgow Street, before Mr. J. IL Salmon, S.M. A plea of not guilty was made by Mr, C. P. Brown, who appearer! for Lawson. Decision was reserved. Detective-Sergeant J. Ji. Robertson who [irosecuted. said bets were taken by an outside member of the Police Force on March 4 and 9, when amounts of 2/6 and 5/- were involved. When interviewed by Detective J. Murray, Lawson said that she took bets only to oblige customers and rang them to a bookmaker, who was unaware that she was taking bets; he thought they were her own bets- and those of her family. Detective Murray produced day cards aud a book with entries in it. Mr, Brown submitted that there was no case to answer, as the evidence was insufficient.
