Business Telephones And Private Calls
Sir, —Is your office like mine, cursed with the private telephone conversation by the members of the staff — chiefly the young female ones? On Monday morning we have “How did you enjoy the weekend” telephone inquiry. On Friday the office telephone system gets worked hard by the staff arranging with their "opposite numbers” what they are going to do for the weekend. Then there is the lunch time and the 5 p.m. calls. In my office young fellows are continually ringing up asking for Miss So-and-So. Really, it’s sometimes very difficult for the managing director to be able to get a free line on the telephone, and I have actually had my business adversely affected because a client could not get through—and the office system was engaged by two of my female staff carrying on private conversations in business hours. I am rather curious to know whether other businesses have the same trouble. —I am, etc., MANAGER.
