SWING AWAY FROM GOVERNMENT

Australian By-election SYDNEY, March 20. The final result of the first preference. counts in the Hurstville by-elec-tion indicates a victory for the Heffron Labour candidate, Mr. Clive Evatt, K.C., and shows a distinct swing away from the Government. When counting ceased the position was: Dr. Thomas (United Australia Party), 7552; Evatt (Heffron Labour), 6863; Aiderman McGrath (Lang Labour), 5575. It is expected that Mr. Evatt will secure sufficient of Mr. McGrath’s second preference votes to elect him. At tbe last general election the United Australia Party candidate, the late Dr. Webb, polled 11,493 votes, against his Labour opponent’s 3982. The Premier of New South Wales, Mr. B. S. B. Stevens, in an interview said that it seemed beyond doubt that the distribution of preference votes would give Mr. Evatt a substantial majority.
