The Racing World. SEVEN WINS FOR T. R. GEORGE
Record Successes Of Trentham Stable
FINAL DAY OF AUTUMN MEETING
Beau Vite’s Challenge Stakes; Wins For Peerless And Sulieman , (By The Watcher.) ■ The autumn meeting of the Wellington Racing Club which concluded at Trentham on Saturday in glorious weather, was a triumph for Trentham, specially the stable controlled by T. R. George. To his three successes on Friday, he added four more, making seven for the two days—a record. Included in his wins on Saturday were the two principal events, the North Island Challenge Stakes and the Autumn Handicap. George is now in a strong position in the lead for the winning trainer’s list, which he has hehded in more than one season in the past. Another feature was the continued success of Beau Pere’s stock. Gayest Son gave a him his seventh juvenile event on end at Trentham, and in the Challenge Stakes his colts were first and second, and one of his fillies, Peerless, won the Autumn Handicap. The win of Beau Vite was decisive, and there can be no doubt that he is New Zealand’s leading juvenile, with High Caste in Australia. Taking a line through Beaulivre who was very little inferior to High Caste in two clashes, Beau Vite must rank very high indeed, and it is quite on the cards that he is as good as, if not better than, the Bulsanshar colt who is now owned by Mr. H. Tancred, Sydney. Those Australians who offered Mr. Ralph Stewart a tempting price for Beau Vite here in January were good judges. The win of Peerless in the Autumn Handicap was at the expense of the favourite Royal Chief, but the favourite Suleiman, who ruined his chance on Friday by hanging, came home a comfortable winner in the sprint event.
A.large field contested the Champion Hack Cup, but most of them found the journey too solid, and the race was won in solid style by the improving three-year-old Yours Truly, who gave Trentham another good win, as he is trained there by J. W. Lowe for Mr. J. S. McLeod, the president of the Racing Conference. Two horses Lustral and Trebor were again successful, Trebor gaining his fifth win in succession. Meamea won the last race at a good price when she defeated th© favourite Haughty Winner. The track was again in first class order, and the going excellent. There was a large attendance, hut the totalizator turnover did not show the advance expected after Friday’s substantial increase. However, it was always slightly ahead and the good run of the club is still continuing in every way. Few bodies can boast of such luck with the weather, and the last time it rained for racing there and there was a decline in turnover has almost faded from memory. The figures for the day were £75,437 against £70,636, an increase of £4BOl. For the meeting the total was £124,628 compared with £112,238 last March an Increase of £12,390. Double to Lustral. Lustral again won the higliweight; He was always fairly handy, and he finished on in solid style to outstay Cuisinier, who was always one of the leaders. The outsider of the field, in Happy Heels, came on for third against the favourite, Sir Nigel, who was a long way bick in most of the running. Ruling Star and Bumble were the best of the others. Ruling Star got a very bad run. Four in Line. There was a terrific finish to the Juvenile Handicap, four horses going over the line blanketed. The win of Gayest Son was a very solid performance, for ne hung badly into the straight, and covered a good deal of extra ground. He was still clear at the last furlong, but here he was hotly pursued by Baran, who had just been in behind him all the way, and then Serenata on the rails, and Bcold, both appeared on the scene. These four horses joined in one of the finest finishes seen on the course for a long time, Gayest .Son just getting his nose in front of Baran, who beat Serenata by a head, and Scold wag another nose away. They were followed by Prudent Prince, Night Pal, and Pearl of Asia. Gayest Son is making very solid improvement, and looks like eventually reaching very high class. Baran improved with his race, and he should not have long to wait for a turn. Serenata, stablemate of Baran, ran an excellent race also, and so did Scold, who, with the winner, had to start from the outside of the. field.
Beau Vite Superior.
The North Island Challenge Stakes was a. triumph for Beau Vite. Beaulivre led all the way, attended by Oratory, Smoke Screen and Beau Vite. Once in the straight Oratory and Smoke Screen did not come on, but Beau Vite, finishing very resolutely, got up on terms with Beaulivre and then went away to win convincingly. Oratory was a fair third. There was a gap to Moorsotis and Smoke Screen finished last. The progeny of Beau Pere have now won the last seven events at Trentham for which juveniles are eligible. Beau Vite Should take high honours as a three-year-old if all goes well with him. There is now no doubt about his convincing superiority over the juveniles in the Dominion. Peerless Wins Well. The favourite in the Autumn Handicap, Royal Chief, staged a brilliant run from the rear of the field over the concluding stages, but just short of the post he was weakening again and failed by a small margin to catch Peerless. Peerless
had been just in front of the favourite throughout the running in the rear of the field, and she moved up a little earlier without having to cover anything like the same amount of extra ground. They both proved too good for the pacemaker,-Dic-tate, who was in front all the way except for three furlongs in the middle stages, when Lady Montana took over. Entail was fourth after being prominent throughout, but the others were never dangerous. Royal Chief was a little bit unlucky in being forced to the outer, but Peerless won well and was holding him at the finish. Except for her lapse at New Plymouth she has shown good form this autumn. The others had every chance. Won All the Way. The greatly improved three-year-old Yours Truly got out first in the Champion Hack and led all the way. He was closely attended from the outset by Inquisitor and Hinerawe ran up fast to be just .alongside the leader as they ran down the back, other horses prominent being Sudan, Rarotonga, Wild Talk, Lady Lyric and Capricious. There was very little change in the order throughout the running as the pace was fairly solid, but as they approached the critical stage of the race Capricious had gone fairly well back. Once in the straight Inquisitor came on and seriousy threatened Yours Truy, but over the last furlong the leader came on again and completely outstayed his rival. The remainder were totally unable to make any impression, but Capricious came through for a poor third. Wild Talk was. fourth, followed by Morning Flight, W'aka and Settlement.
The length of the journey completely beat most of the field. It is an unusual feat for a winner over eleven furlongs to win all the way, but Tattersail deserves great credit for his judicious handling. .Capricious received early interference, but she was fairly handy a mile from home and drifted badly down the back instead of improving her position. Sudan and Wild Talk were always prominent, but Waka finished fifth from well back. Mataroa was never dangerous. Suleiman Atones. Suleiman, ridden just in behind the leaders on this occasion and finishing much straighter, had the Suburban Handicap won a long way from home. It was just a jpatter of him making his run and coming along in the straight to collect the prize. Amigo ran on better than the others for second, catching the pacemaker, Density, not far off the post. Rakahanga was a good fourth after having gone with Density all the way. Suleiman was in a class by himself and could have done better. His first day’s backers were indeed unlucky. Lady Ina drew No. 1, failed to go the early pace and could finish only sixth. Counterblast was a complete disappointment at the meeting. Five in Succession. Trebor made his record five wins on end When he took the Belmont Handicap. He was not prominent early, but from the false rail he came through on the inner, the early leaders, Deficit, Prediction and Saki, beginning to weaken. Over the final stages White Gold threw out a determined challenge, but she just failed to reach the winner. Floral Robe came with a rattle to take third place, making T. George’s stable triumph complete, as this race gave him his seventh win at the meeting and Floral Robe is also in his stable. The favourite, Ecstatic, had every chance. A little better plneed early and White Gold would have won. Prediction looked dangerous for half a mile, but weakened in the straight. Meainea Surprises in Last.
The eighth and seventh favourite Meamea brought oft the surprise of the day in the concluding event. S’he was, as usual, slow to find her feet, and was not prominent early, but she finished with arj, amazing burst over the last furlong to win going away from the favourite, Haughty Winner. She had run unsighted in the Thompson over the same distance, but she drew No. 1 in that race and though on this occasion she drew No. 2 this field had a big tail and strung itself out over a considerable distance, so that she was able to work up within striking distance by the time the straight was reached. Haughty Winner was several places back in the running, but when he forged past the early leaders, Homily, The Bigot, Golden Ridge and Gay Chou, and took charge in the last furlong, he looked a certain winner. He was stopping quickly at the end. Homily ran one of her good races, and the best of the others were Trench Fight, Silver River, Gay Chou and The Bigot.
