The top price for the imported mares was 575gns„ paid by Sir James; Gunson, Auckland, for the lelstead ’““re, I lo ** lege, whose dam is a halt-sister to Artist’s Proof, the winner of iiooi in , stakes. Another Aucklander to purchase was Mr. James Fletcher, who secured Medusa for 500gn.s. This mare was sired by the brilliant galloper Diomedes, and is from the notable Sunshine family. Her half-sister, Dark Fire, won the valuable Red Rose Stakes of £212-.. The Mai rarapa breeders. Messrs. A. and J. Gray. Masterton, bought Revinella for 4<ogns. She is closely descended from the English Oakg winner, Glass Doll, and is sired by Reveillon, a good horse by the 1937 champion sire of England in bolano. Tne French mare, Flying Star 11, realized 500gns„ being bought by Stephenson and Co., Ltd., as agents. Her sire, Salmon Leap, a first-class stayer, is a grandso* of The Tetrarch and she is very stoutly bred on the dam s side. Miss Pippin, whose granddam was a sister to the famous stayer, The M hite Knight, dual winner of the Ascot Gold Cup, was purchased for The Grange Stud by Mr. M Grogan, at 340gns. Her sire, Apple Sammy, was one of the leading sires of two-year-olds in England last year. These mures should give a valuable infusion of new blood to the Dominion s studs. The oldest of the mares, Stourbridge Fair, who will be represented in England by a two-year-old runner from Miss Dorothy Paget’s stable, failed to reach the reserve. She is a particularly handsome nuire by the Two Thousand Guineas winer, Ellangowan, and is from a noted winning line. Other sales were as follows: —
