WOODEN BUILDINGS IN BRICK AREA
Comment On Fire Risk
The Wellington Fire Board yesterday received a letter from the Underwriters’ Association drawing attention to the continued menace of wooden buildings in the brick area of the city. The association wrote that in view of the widespread destruction caused by the fire in the Social Security Buildingin Aitken Street, strong representations had been made to the city council in connexion with other premises of the kind, particularly mentioning the building in Wakefield Street, formerly known as the Glide Skating Rink.
The chairman, Mr. S. S. Dean, said he thought the board should support, the protest made by the Underwriters’ Association. The building mentioned had been erected many years ago as a temporary structure, and still remained in use the permit having been renewed every six months by the city council. Unfortunately, these temporary buildings had ti way of becoming permanent.
Mr. W. .1. Gaudin said that the matter bad already come before the council, which had decided that the owner would be required to rebuild in permanent material within a certain time.
