LEAKY FIRE STATION
Defects At Constable Street Ever since the Constable Street tire brigade .station was erected there have been complaints as to its structural defects, resulting in leakages, and, iu more recent years, iu cracks in the walls, which show a tendency to open out as time advances. This matter came before the Wellington Fire Board yesterday in a letter from Mitchell and Mitchell, architects, who inspected the building last month. Theip report stated that the brickwork became waterlogged during rain, and recommended that nothing in the way of painting should be undertaken except after a long dry spell. The parapets were held largely to blame .for the manner in which water seeped through the brickwork, and to prevent any trouble from that source the architects recommended that the parapets should be capped with copper at a cost of about £126. All the cracks should be chipped out and filled with mastic, and, When dry, the \^, ls should be painted according to specification. It was reported that one member of the brigade had already been engaged iu mending the cracks, but he bad said that if the work was to be done by brigadesmen they should be supplied with proper tools. The architects thought it was too big a job for' the brigadesmen and recommended that the work should be done before the winter, otherwise the leakage would be worse than it was last winter.
The matter was referred to the building committee, with power to act.
