WELLINGTON’S FIRES
An Eleven Months’ Review A report ou fires during the past eleven months in Wellington city, submitted to the Wellington Fire Board yesterday, showed a considerable reduction iu the number of calls, as compared with those for the hist corresponding period. The total number of calls for the eleven months ended February 28 was 824, compared with 1130 the year before. Curiously enough the number of property fires was the same. 204; chimney tires were only 58 as compared with 106, and gorse, grass and rubbish tires were reduced from 722 to 258. Justifiable false alarms increased from 178 to 183, but malicious false alarms were fewer, 121 as compared with 130. During January the brigade received 105 calls—-28 property, 2 chimney, and 44 gorse, grass or rubbish fires. Of the 31 false alarms received 25 were considered justifiable. There were 160 calls during February. Of those 18 were property, 5 < hitnney, and 81 gorse, 'grass or rubbish fires. This month proved to be a bad one for false alarms, for of the 56 calls received. 25 were recorded as malicious.
