The Racing World. THOMPSON HANDICAP WON BI TAURANGI
Three-year-old Filly Just Prevails In Exciting Finish KEEN RACING SEEN AT TRENTHAM Beaupartir Outclasses St. Leger Field (By The Watcher.) Very keen racing featured the opening of the Wellington Racing Club’s autumn meeting at T rentham yesterday. Ibe ptincipal handicap, the Thompson, was won very natiowly by the three-year-old filly Taurangi, who is the first of her age and sex to win this important mile event since Golden Hair in 1934. Ihe feature of this finish was that the winner and runner-up, Laughing Lass, are owned by brothers, Alessis. W. McA. and I. A. Duncan. This is the most important success for Mr. Duncan’s colours for a long time, and it is also the first occasion on which he has won the Thompson Handicap. 7he victory was very popular.
The St. Leger Stakes, for three-year-olds, drew a small field, and it saw Beaupatir outclass his opponents. He thoroughly deserved his success, for he has throughout the season been a consistent runner-up to Defaulter. partir carries the colours of Mr. 1.. H. Lowry, by whom he was bred, and it is Mr. Lowry’s second win in this event, the other having been gained in IJIjJ bv Balboa. It also gave jockey A. h. Ellis his first success in this race. The Railway Handicap saw the defeat of the favourite, Suleiman, by that honest mare Florence Mills. Suleiman, however, seriously affected his chance by hanging badly. The Pacific Handicap, for two-jeai-olds, was won in impressive style by the improved colt Beau V ite, who was having his first start since he scored on the same track in January. In this event the stable also supplied the run-ner-up in Pearl of Asia. One of the features of the results was the prominent showing of the stock of Beau Pere. They filled the first two places in the St. Leger, ran first and third in the Pacific Handicap, and won the Thompson Handicap. The stable of T. R. George also had a very good innings, winning the Highweight, Pacific and Tinakori Handicaps. A. E. Ellis, H. N. Wiggins and W. J. Broughton each rode two winners. The weather was excellent, being fine and warm, and there was a good attendance for an off day, the gates showing a slight increase on the corresponding day last year. The recent consistent trend in totalizator turnovers at Trentham was well maintained, the total put through being £49,191 (win £21,351/10/-, place £27,839/10/-), compared with £41,602 on the corresponding day last year, an increase of £7589. After the contest in the St. Leger the winner was decorated with the ribbon in the birdcage by Lady Galway. The judicial committee met on three occasions during the day. They recommended the immediate inclusion of Great Quex on the schooling list. The interference met with by Ruling Star in’ the Trial Plate was due to being squeezed, Broughton’s explanation being accepted. An inquiry was opened into interference met by Rakahanga and other horses in the early stages of the Railway Handicap. After preliminary evidence had been taken the inquiry was adjourned till today. The chief stipendiary steward, Mr. C. Gomer, was present. The track was in excellent order and earned high praise from visiting trainers, though the going was not specially fast. It was, however, ideal for the horses. A Muddling Race. The Highweight Handicap was run at a muddling pace which did not suit the favourite, Prime Quality. After being prominent early he dropped back in the middle stages and though he came ,ou again at the finish the sprint home vas not suited to him and he couid finish only fourth. . Lustral took advantage of the slow pace early to lead for a time, but down the back Bumble and Shy led, with AU Blood becoming very prominent also Shy took charge leaving the false rail, being challenged immediately by All Blood and Lustral, and in the last furlong Sir Nigel came through. . Lustral held on to win narrowly "from Sir Nigel, with All Blood a good third. There was a gap to Prime Quality, who was followed by Bumble ami Sunee. . . , . Lustral owes his win to sticking ou well and also to capable handling by Ellis, whereas the majority of the other leaders completely failed to appreciate how their mounts were spoiling their chances by pulling so hard. Great Quex took no part in the race, for, after diving twice through the barrier, he was withdrawn. The Day’s Surprise. Ruling Star, favourite for the Trial Plate, got a bad run in the first furlong and went right back, never recovering his position. On the other hand, the second favourite, Improvident, had every chance. He was always in a handy posf* tion but failed to come on in the straight. Most prominent in the running were Parian. Prediction. Cuisinier. Improvident and Barabbas. Prediction went to the front nt the end of two furlongs and led round the turn from Floral Robe, Parian, Improvident. Cuisinier, I.»arabhas and Diareus. Prediction led into the
straight and held on well till the closing stages, when Barabbas, with a very solid run on the outside, just got up on the post. Cnisinier was a very close third, with Titter, who came through on the rails, fourth. They wore followed by Is Iz.el. Floral Robe. Little Dorrit and Parian.- , Tlio winner was much better suited Uy the big track than he was* at Carterton on Saturday and lie won really well, though narrowly. He it? a typical Rabbi. Prediction showed greatly improved form Easy St. Legcr Win. Beatipartir duly fulfilled expectations in the St. Leger, which was not run at a fast pace. Coronation made most of the running, but-a mile from home was joined by Old Bill. Beaupartir always being handy in behind and running without pulling. Coronation was pulling very hard, specially when Old Bill joined him. The order was the same into the straight, where Beaupartir drew to the front and the issue was soon over. Peerless came strongly at flic end to beat Old Bill for second, witli Capricious handy. Coronation stopping very badly. Bcnupartir won like a good colt and could have gone up to the lead at any stage. An Improved Colt. The .favourite. Beau Vite, won the Pacific Handicap in very convincing style. He was always fairly handy, the pace being made by Baran, Night Pal and Gayest Son. and as they came on to the course proper Baran and Gayest Son were leading. Baran weakened, but Gayest Son came on and wits then tackled by Beau Vite. Once Beau Vite ranged alongside he soon settled the issue, but over the last ’ bit his stablematc, Pearl of Asia, eiime through on the rails and forced him right up to the post. Gayest Son weakened but was still a comfortable third from Scold, who was followed by Moorsotis, Baran, Night Pal, Arariui and Counter.
Beau Vite is a greatly-improved horse and will be one of the leading youngsters before the season is out. Pearl of Asia put up a wonderful performance as, except for Globe Trotter, who failed to go away on terms, she was the last of the bunch running out of the sprint stretch. Gayest Son is maintaining the promise he showed in his early races. Moorsotis was well buck throughout the running, but was closer at the end than at any other stage. Baran ran a good race, but he needs sharpening up. A Keen Finish. The Thompson Handicap provided a thrilling contest, the second favourite Taurangi holding on just long enough to squeeze home in front of an electrifying finish by Laughing Lass. V good start was effected, but Lady Montana was slow to get going. Taurangi actually began best, but was pulled in behind, and when they had settled down the pace was made by Mittie, Taurangi, Amigo, The Bigot, Haughty Winner, and Royal Chief. As they ran round the turn Amigo was in charge from The Bigot, Mittie and Trench Fight. Royal Chief was fairly bandy, while Taurangi had gone back on to the fence. Laughing Lass was well back, but improving her position. Once in the straight The Bigot and Trench Fight quickly failed and Amigo did not hang on much longer in the lead. Haughty Winner and Taurangi coming forward and finally Laughing Lass. Taurangi had the better of Haughty Winner a fair way off the post, but she had not the smallest margin in reserve against Laughing Lass, who would have won in another stride. Haughty Winner was still a good third half a length away, with Dictate fourth, and then The Bigot, Royal Chief, Amigo, Mittie, and Trench Fight. There was very little between the first three horses. They were all responsible for great efforts. Trench Fight was a big disappointment. He was well placed throughout 'but collapsed badly in the straight. Dictate finished very well from a long way back. Royal Chief was better placed than usual in the early stages, but he made little impression on the leaders in the run home, though both he and The Bigot were fairly handy. Four On End. An outsider in Deficit endeavoured to win all the way in the Tinakori Handlcap and nearly succeeded, as it was only in the concluding stages that -he was beaten into third place. Nearest him in the running were the favourite, Ecstatic, Great Flight and White Gold. Trebor was handy in the early stages, but dropped back later, and Blonde Princess went up. but she did not lust very long in a prominent place. Deficit was challenged over the last furlong bv Ecstatic, who failed to make much impression, and then Trebor came through, followed by Lady Lyne, who had been in the rear in most of the early running. Trebor won nicely from Lady Lyric and Deficit, with Ecstatic fourth, and then Saki, Kurrawong and White Gold. This makes Trebor’s fourth win on end and all in the space of n fortnight. Deficit ran on much better than usual. Lady Lvric and Ecstatic appeared to gallop a little short, but Lady Lyric finished solidly. Huntino took no part in the race, refusing to line up with the other horses, though he went after them at a big interval when the barrier was released. Favourite Hangs Badly.
The favourite, Suleiman, spoilt his chance in the Railway Handicap by hanging badly, for after beginning well from the outer, so well, in fact* that ho was able to run over to the rails, he finished up out on the outside of the track in the straight. This enabled Florence Mills to run through from the false rail and head him off and, though Suleiman was going well again at the finish, be never looked like making up his lost ground. Top Row finished very solidly from the middle of the field and just failed to catch Suleiman for second. There was a gap to Lady Ina, and then came Homily, Density and Rukahanga. Density had gone witli Suleiman to the straight, but she weakened from the false rail. Counterblast was in a good position till two furlongs from home, and then collapsed. Florence Mills won very solidly, desjiite Suleiman’s bad luck. The chances of some of the horses were affected by interference in the early stages. favourite Wins Last. The last race was won by the favourite, Wild Talk, who was always in a handy position behind the pacemaker, Earl Colossus. Others well placed also wore Rarotonga, Larwood and Red Witch, but Waka was at flic rear of the field. Once in the straight Wild Talk drew to the front and was winning comfortably till the final furlong, when Waka unwound a brilliaht rim from the rear and just failed to reach the winner. Larwood was handy third, witli Earl Colossus fourth and Drachma next. The feature of the race was tile finishing run of Waka. Larwood was a rank outsider and paid the second biggest dividend of the day for his third placing. Red Witch, who was second favourite, was handy till the straight, but she moved very scratchily and was beaten a long way from home. Te Morehu looked likely when he poked up on the inner in tlie straight, but lie did not go on with it.
