ST. PATRICK’S DAY

Irish National Concert DAN FOLEY ACCLAIMED The high standard of entertainment which has been set in the annual St. Patrick’s Day concerts in Wellington in the past was fully maintained in the grand Irish national concert held last night in the Town Hall, which was seated practically to capacity. A feature of the evening was the singing of a massed choir of 500 voices from the Marist Brothers’ schools of the city and suburbs. The choral items were:' “Irish Hvmn to St. Patrick,” “Killarney,” “Blight of the Earls,” and “Come Back to Erin.” The Tasman Street school choir was heard in “What an Irishman Means by Machree,” and “When Thro’ Life Unblest We Rove”; the Thorndon School choir in “Ireland, Dear Ireland,” and “The Valley Lies Smiling”: the Miramar School choir in “My Heart’s in County Clare” and “In Derry Vale.” Making his final appearance, the New Zealand Irish tenor, Mr. Dan Boley, was accorded an enthusiastic reception by the audience. He presented a bracket of three solos. “Shall My Soul Pass Through Ireland,” “A Shawl of Galway Grey,” and “Pride of Petravoie.” As an encore he sang the song of the Irish Republic, “Legion of the Rearguard.” His accompanist was Kathleen Dunn. The other soloists were Miss Muriel Hitchiugs, in “Fairy Tales of Ireland” and “I Know Where I’m Goin’ ”; Mr. Russell Laurenson, “Fairy Free” and “Phil the Fluter’s Ball”; Master C. Maskill of the Marist Brothers’ school,' Miramar, “The Valley Where Wishes Come Tine.” Attractive Irish dances were presented by the pupils of Miss Lillian O’Leary. Mr. Assheton Harbord’s pierrot concert party, . comprising Lawrence Harrington, Marjorie * Whittington, Ina Small, John Brown, Bob Hutchinson, Joy 'Wilson, Adele Edmonds and Gordon Morley, was seen in an interlude of “tonics.” The Tin Hat Club orchestra, conducted by Mt; P. Cole, played the incidental music. The accompanists were Mrs. J. Walshe, Mr. Maxwell Bernie, and Master Richard Farrell. The total proceeds of the concert are to be devoted to Catholic education in Wellington.
