FINAL TRIALS FOR TRENTHAM
Mostly Sprinting Tasks FOG PREVENTS ACCURATE TIMING (By The Watcher.) 'The track work at Trentham for this year’s autumn meeting has not been very illuminating. The majority of the horses came on the scene very late, and heavy ground mists have obscured a lot of the work. Eor the final trials yesterday a heavy fog precluded accurate timing, but horses who worked well were Taurangi, Suleiman, Haughty Winner. Beaupartir, Old Bill, Bed Cat. Beau Vite and Vascones. Practically all the work was on the outside of the course proper. Counterblast and Wild Talk, separately, ran half-miles in practically the same time, breaking 50. Trench Fight and Great Flight were obscured by the fog. Beaulivre and Globe Trotter worked when it was still dark. Homily ran the last four of six in 52, and Serenata beat Regale over four in 52 without being ridden out. Submission and Moorsotis finished clear of Scold over four in 50, neither being ridden out. Baran and Beau Vite ran five in 1.2 i, t>he last half in 49}. Beau Vite, with a pull in the weights, went well. Baran is on the big side and looked susceptible to improvement. Beau Vite has done all his work exceptionally well. Queen of Song and Siegmund ran a mile in 1.43, finishing on terms. The advance of the season has worked a big improvement in the mare. Rakahanga finished well ahead of Oratory over five, the last four in 49}. Laughing Lass, with her trainer in the saddle, took the same time. Laughing Lass's effort was good under her weight. Vascones ran a half in 49}, and is a definitely improved juvenile. Shy finished in front of Prime Quality and Southern Blood over six, the last half in 51}. Beaupartir made friends by the way he finished at .the end of seven against Dungarvan and Gay Son in 1.29}. Gay Son was beaten off, but he is a gross colt. Peerless and Galteemore ran seven in 1.32. Galteeftore is an improved horse. Royal Chief, heavily bandaged in front, ran the last half of his work with Entail on the plough in 51}, and hit out freely,. Red Cat and Taurangi ran four up the back in 48 —a good l gallop, specially for Red Cat. Ruling Star and Trebor took 51} for four, neither being ridden out. All Blood and Parian were on terms at the end of five in 1.3}. Smoke Screen bounced along over four down the back in 39} and was anxious to go all the way. Pearl of Asia finished better than Gayest Son over five, the last half in 51. Old Bill, who looks well, led Bumble and Sudan home over seven in 1.31, the last half in 52. 'lt was not a bad effort for Bumble. Haughty Winner, Top Row and Aranui was the order at the end of four in 48. Suleiman had no diflifiulty in disposing of Mittie over five in 1.3, the last half in 49. Suleiman went well, but Mittie was very “proppy.” Improvident, alone, ran six in 1.19, and could have done better. RICCARTON’S STRONG TEAM
Trench Fight’s Chance In
Thompson
PROSPECTS DISCUSSED
Dominion Special Service.
CHRISTCHURH, March 16-
Riccarton stables have been strong supporters of the Wellington Racing Club s meeting for many years past, and, the i presentation from the . centre for tms week’s autumn fixture is well up to the high standard of previous teams. It is safe to suggest that all of the contingent can be depended upon to race promineut--15 The first horse from the south to parade -will be Improvident in the Trial Plate, and though lie will be up against some smart gallopers from the North Island, his chance must be seriously considered. , ~ ... Capricious will carry the southern banner in the St. Leger Stakes. She has won her two recent races by staying on, and bred as she is, by Night Raid from Egotism, there is every reason to expect her to see out tomorrow’s journey. Moorsotis will he put to his first serious test in the Pacific Handicap. There is a tendency in the North Island to overlook southern two-year-old form, but in Moorsotis Trentham racegoers will see a good-class voungster with decided staying ability, and trackwatchers will-.be surprised if he is not on hand at the end of the six-furlong journey. He won the Middle Park Plate and bis race nt M ingatui at the right end and the straight six tomorrow will suit the long-striding colt. Scold does not make appeal in this company ns she appears to he too slow over the early part, and Not Out. though likely to attract attention by his good looks, will lack experience. Four for Thompson. Royal Chief will no doubt he in keen demand for the Thompson Handicap. He has not been weighted out, and has done well since racing at Dunedin, but may be handicapped by the fast pace which is certain to be set from the outset. Reasonably well placed, however, over the first two furlongs he will make his presence felt . over the business stages Though Royal Chief won over a mile at Wingatui last month, his form was far below what’ he attained in Australia, but he has gone on the right way since, and, incidentally, has had a good deal of his final work on grass tracks. Trenchs Fight must be considered handily placed with S.S, and it might be that the handicapper has taken a risk with him. A mile journey will be to his advantage, as over longer distances it has always been necessary to restrain him early. He is certain to go to the front tomorrow and no doubt his rider will allow him to run his own race. In that case, he will be a source of trouble to the remainder. Haughty Winner is also engaged in the Railway Handicap, but it would seem as if he will start in the big mile event. North Island racegoers saw him in winning action in January, and though he has failed' twice since, he will be in the right order for the ordeal. Dictate has corpe into favour since his good race at Motukarara, and his attractive gallops since. Trench Fight may prove to be the best of the four. Great Flight has every credential to be one of the favourites for the Tinakori Handicap. Her four wins to date have all been attractively accomplished, and she has been improving all the time. . Density’s Speed. Counterblast has always raced well at Trentham. and the favourable going tomorrow will suit her even better than when she won on her trip there in January. Density will be an interesting candidate. ns she won two races decisively on her visit to Trentham in January and lias been reeling off some outstanding sprints in the past few weeks. She can command such a burst of speed that she is certain to be one of the leaders, if not the actual pacemaker, well into the run home, but the last few chains may find her out. Lady Leigh is also a lightweight possibility, and will have going in her favour. From a staying point of view she may be one to beat Density home. Counterblast is likely to carry most South Island support. , Should Great Flight win the Tinakori Hack Handicap, her stablemate, Wild Talk, will be in keen favour for the Silverstream Hack Handicap, as both have been galloping together for some weeks and there has been nothing between them. Wild Talk raced well at Trenthanj jn January, and filled a close second place to Moorsotis in the Middle Park Plate, her last race. Wakn is also entitled to respect in this race. He was prominent on his last two trips to Trentham, but always after having had a race at the meeting. Wild Talk is certain to carry the confidence of southern visitors.
