The president said that, generally speaking, the past year in the commercial printing industry had shown advancement. He dealt with the Import Control Regulations, 1938, in conjunction with the expressed desire of the Government relating to expansion in secondary industries, and said that the industry would do its share in equipping itself to cater for the increased demands of the manufacturers of the Dominion, who would be called upon to replace the considerable volume of commodities which, under the selection of imports, would no longer reach these shores. The secretary presented a comprehensive report of the year’s activities of the federation, the present trend of events in the industry and the prospective demands upon it likely to arise as the result of the import control regulations. Officers elected for the ensuing two years were as follows: President, Mr. B. C. Jacobs (Auckland); vice-presi-dent, Mr. E. Darroch (Timaru), with Mr. 11. Harris (Dunedin), immediate past president; councillors, Messrs. E. Aldridge, YV. A. Bascand, H. Coull, A. Dennison, H. YV. Osborn, T. Somerville, B. E. 11. YVhitcombe and Basil C. H, Whitcoinbe. Mr. Jaeobs, upon taking the chair, thanked the delegates for the honour they had conferred upon him, and expressed the hope that the industry would experience a period of industrial peace accompanied by increased production and a commensurate measure of prosperity. It was a recommendation to the incoming council that the conference of 1940 should be held in Christchurch.
