The main events today are the Thompson and Railway Handicaps, the St. Leger Stakes for three-year-olds,, and the Pacific handicap for two-year-olds. Tomorrow, in addition to the Autumn and Suburban Handicaps, there wifi be the North'lsland Challenge Stakes, and the Champion Hack Cup. Highweight events at Trentham frequently result in surprises, but there less likelihood of that on this occasion. The form horses are humble, Sir Prime Quality and Lustral. Shy is capable of winning at his best. The favourites may include PRIME QUALITY. BUMBLE and LUSTRAL. 12.52— TRIAL PLATE, of £3OO. Seven furlongs. Barabbas ... 8 o —Rfln a good race at Woodville last month, and again at Carterton last Saturday, where the course did not suit him. Interesting because of being by Sporting Blood, best three-year-old of his year. Improvident 8 5 —Has five placings, and won last start (dead-heat Rex MaitP land) Banks Peninsula, six furlongs, March 4. He was second to Spartan at Riccarton, February 4. six furlongs, and his form seems as good as anything in the held. rnevnth 8 5 —Ran second to Red Cat, Woodville, six furlongs, mst month, jacy cn .... which looks good maiden form. This is the largest field of the day, and the class lends itself to a surprise by an improver, but the logical form horses are Improvident, Jacynth, Barabbas, Ruling Star Parian Titter and possibly Prediction. The best backed may incilu.de IMPROVIDENT, JACYNTH and RULING STAR.
1.35 N.Z. ST. LEGER STAKES, of £5OO. For three-year-olds. One mile and three-ciuarters. Beaupartir .. 8 10 —His ruunirig-up form to Defaulter makes him logical favourite. Good second to Auckland Cup winner in Taranaki Cup last week, and race should sharpen him up. Coronation .. 810 -Has been a disappoining colt till recently, and has now won up to ten furlongs in hack class. A well-bred colt, who might make the grade, as on the tracks his work is high-class. Old Bill .... 810 —A good winner in hacks and a solid finisher. Capricious .. 8 7 —Has wou over a mile two furlongs and a half at Dunedin. Bred to slay and the journey will not trouble her. Peerless ..8 7 —Peerless won the Oaks, and ran second in the Manawatu Cup to Wild Chase. She won the Rangitikei Cup, but failed in Taranaki Cup. Her form is patchy, but at its best it would be the likeliest to upset Beaupartir. There is no doubt that Beaupartir will go out a solid favourite. If he is upset it may be by the improving Coronation, who has done work in private good enough for top class. 2.17— PACIFIC HANDICAP, of £5OO. For two-year-olds. .Six furlongs. Baran ... 9 0 —Won his last two races in spring at Christchurch on two concluding days. Carried 8.5 last start, beat Great Swoop, Gold Salute, Master Hotspur. Submission . 8 8 —Won here in spring and at Woodville in December. Third last start behind Varimond and La Bru at Wanganui, and a bit unlucky. Moorsotis ..8 7 Won Middle Park Plate, Ricca rtou. Failed first day Dunedin, but won on second, beating Night Pal and Aranui. Night Pal meets him 71b. and Aranui 91b. better. Moorsotis will probably improve and run better over' distances like this. Beau Vite . 8 5 —Won impressively here last start, third day January, five furlongs, running on strongly. Meets Aranui on same terms. Should be hard to beat. Gayest Sou . 8 3 —Third first start Woodville, five furlongs and a halt, to Vaseones and Counter. Won Napier, five furlongs, March 4. Full brother to Gay Son and shows much promise, but may not be ready just yet for this test. . Aranui .. .8 1 —Has not won a race here yet, but has three placings in last four starts, to Beau Vite here, and twice at Dunedin. He is bred to improve, but on January form he looks very unlikely to beat Beau Vite. Pearl of Asia 7 7 —Won at Wanganui, beat La Bru, and again at Taranaki. A well-bred filly, and on the improve. A stablemate ot Beau ' Vite. Vascones ... 7 12—His only success was at Woodville. His form there was an improvement, but not up to this class. Counter ... 711 —Won at Pahiatua. and was unlucky at Woodville. Runs on well, but has not yet struck strong class. Fils de Vaals 7 4 —Won over six’at Auckland, January 30, on" heavy track. Millament .. 7 o —Has not won yet. Second (poor) to Varimond at Woodville. Third to Pearl of Asia and Fils de Vaals, New Plymouth. Will have to Improve. Not Out .... 7 0 —Only one race Social Credit 7 0 —No form. The first-class youngsters are absent this year, but in their place ar the top of the handicap there are some well-performed colts, and in the field there are distributed several likelv improvers. The best backed division may comprise BEAU VITE. MOORSOTIS and BARAN 2.58— THOMPSON HANDICAP, of £lOOO. One mile. Royal Chief 9 8 —Won last start, Hazlett Memorial, one mile, Dunedin, w.f.a., after failing in Dunedin Cup. These are his only starts •In New Zealand this season. Slowness to find his feet may tell against him, but his class will go a long way at right end. Smoke Screen 9 5 —Will not start. Dungarvan . 8 10 —Struck a patch of form recently with wins at Egmont, and second at Woodville. Has been sore lately, which will prejudice his chance. Trench Fight 8 8 —Has not struck real form this season yet, but has lately been galloping well. One of Dominion’s best milers when right. His only success this season was In C.J.C. Jockey Club Handicap. Ran second last start, ten furlongs. C.J.C. meeting, February, one mile and a quarter, to Queen of Song. Looks likely to run very prominently.
Gay Son ... 8 8 —Has won brilliantly over the distance and up to ten furlongs, but subject to occasional lapses. Begins well and should have a chance.
Haughty Winner 8 5 —Won a double here in January, mile and ten furlongs. Third in C.J.C. Midsummer, unplaced seven furlongs Banks Peninsula. A solid finisher and likely. to be among the favourites. Taurangi .. 8 4 —Won sprint double at Woodville in December, beat Smoke Screen, who went on to run second in A.R.C. Railway. * Narrowly beaten here only start in January, six furlongs, by Lady Ina. Second seven furlongs at Bulls, finishing on. Taurangi is a class galloper with an excellent chance. Amigo 8 2 —Runs well at Trentham. Narrowly beaten here over mile by Haughty Winner In January. Meets him Gib. better. Recent win over six furlongs at Wanganui impressive, though he failed on second day. Must be given a good chance if started. Lady Montana 8 2 —Showed good form here in January with win and second, but over longer distances. Second at Waikato, unplaced Te Aroha. Her form is good, though mile may be a bit short. The Bigot .. 7 13 —Won over mile here In January, beat Mea Mea, Dungarvan, Laughing Lass. Failed twice at Wanganui. The Bigot affects his prospects by hanging, but he is a good miler at his best, and not to be despised here. Mlttio 7 12 —Usually runs over a shorter course and has recent winning form. She cannot be discarded, but lately has been moving short on hard tracks. Dictate .... 7 9 —Most of his recent racing has been over extended distances, •and he may be too slow on his feet in this class. Meamea 7 8 —Won over a mile here in January, beat Mlshna and Dungarvan, with Trench Fight u nplaced. Trench Fight, however, had 9.9, and now meets her 1 11b. better. Meamea beaten next day by The Bigot, and though possibly unlucky she takes time to find her feet.
■ Laughing Lass 7 6 —Third here in January to Haughty Winner and Amigo. She has been consistent, bnt her only success has been over six furlongs, last start at 'Wanganui. She will have to improve. Old Surrey . 7 4 —Won brilliantly over seven nt Feilding and over ten furlongs at Manawatu. Has not raced since Marton, New Year. Cricket .... 7 0 —Not .up to this class. 1 Wild Career . 7 0 —Five placings in last five starts, including two wins. He beat Toro-Koura at Winton over six on a holding track, and nlso won over a mile and a distance at Gore. He was third to Rabble and Parquet last start, Banks Peninsula Cup. He will have to improve on this. This is usually a hard race to win, and the field contains a lot of good recent form. A good beginning and ability to hold the pace is a prime requirement. Form horses that may make most appeal are TAURANGI, TRENCH FIGHT and ROYAL CHIEF. 3.40— TINAKORI HANDICAP, of £350. Seven furlongs. Great Flight 9 2 —Has won four races this season, including last two starts. Dunedin and Banks Peninsula. Carried 9.0 and beat big field. A good hack. Ecstatic ... 810 —Showing decided improvement and running on a lot better. Second to Ruatiti over seven here in January. Won well Just start, six furlongs, Wanganui, gave Trcbor olb. A good .. prospect. Trebor .... 8 8 —Has now won three on end, at Bulls, Taranaki and Carterton. Flntsihed on and must be prominent. White Gold . 8 8 —Has 'been showing herself a second day horse. Runs a fast seven and cannot be ignored. Saki 8 4 —Won and ran third at Pahiatua. Fair form only, but bred to improve. Stella Lux ..SI —Won tivo earlier including a win over Ruatiti at Manawatu. Deficit .... 7 7 —Has pace but does not run on too well. Gay Hunting 7 7 ..No. form for a long time. Huntino ... 7 7 —Only placing at Woodville, where second to Sternchase, but ■ there was a lot of luck in that effort. There does not appear any really outstanding hack in this field, though there are several prospects. The favourites may include ECSTATIC, TREBOR and BLONDE PRINCESS. 4.31— RAILWAY HANDICAP, of £6OO. Six furlongs. Suleiman .. 9 1 —ln two races this season has won both impressively. He lias built up Into a powerful horse and looks an outstanding prospect. Counterblast . 8 9 —Won with same weight last start, Dunedin. Has always run well at Trentham and should repeat. Amigo .... 8 8 —s ee Thompson Handicap. Would have a good chance if started here. Lady Ina 8 8 —Like Counterblast she always runs well "’here. Now meets Counterblast on 131 b. better terms. Was third last start over seven at Bulls. Haughty Winner 8 5 —To start in Thompson Handicap. Mlttio 8 5 —Has not yet proved up to Trentham sprint standard. She shows signs of moving short on the tracks. Rakahanga . 713 —Another who likes the Trentham track. Won brilliantly here first day January, and though only fourth next start, her form here is too consistent to ignore. Russian Ballet 7 12 —Races well at Manawatu, and won Flying Handicap Taranaki last week. Beaten over seven second day. Should have a chance. , Homily ... 711 —Has recently raced over longer journeys showing abundance of pace. Though her form is not a recommendation, she might spring a surprise. Top Row .-. 711 —Won Craven Plate, C.J.C. Midsummer. Unplaced behind Counterblast first day Dunedin, third Hazlett Cup last day and start. Meets Counterblast 131 b. better and should go well. Florence Mills 7 8 —Divided Counterblast and Lady Ina here third day January. Second and first at Woodville last two starts. She meets Counterblast 101 b. better. A solid mare with good prospects. Density 7 U —Won hack double here brilliantly in January. Failed over seven last start C.J.C. Midsummer. Has brilliant pace and might be hard to head. Diamond , , , . , Cutter 7 0 —Has no form to suggest success In tins class. Lady Leigh . 7 0 —Has had no racing since Christmas. She won last start Dunedin beating Top Row, who conies in (fib. better. Valimeen ..70 —Onlv iplacing was second to Llangollen at Rotorua when in receipt of 311 b. Reported unlikely starter. There is a good deal of recent Trentham form in this field, and on that running Counterblast, Lady Ina, Rakahanga and Florence Mills all enter well into the picture. Recent form points definitely to Suleiman, and Amigo must have a ohance if started. The best backed may include SULEIMAN, TOP ROW find LADY INA5.2— SILVERSTREAM HANDICAP, of £350. One mile. - Red Witch 811 —Has been only three times out of a place in eight races, and lias won four.
