New Charlie Chan A Copy Of Warner Oland's
A LOS ANGELES’ motion picture critic had the following to report on “Charlie Chan in Honolulu”:— Twentieth Century-Fox has chosen to make Sidney Toler as near a copy as possible of the late Warner Oland, rather than let Toler interpret the same and beloved Chinese detective in his own way. This was perhaps wisest, because the millions of Chan followers might have been disappointed at an entirely different Chan. Toler wears the same round-top hat and tiny moustache tip at corners of his mouth. He talks in short sentences, recites Oriental philosophy, possesses the same slant eyes and cool poise, and in many scenes is startlingly like Oland in appearance. Despite the outward similarity, Toler registers differently from Oland. It is obvious that Toler can make his own friends among fans and followers of Charlie Chan. He gives a fine, skillful performance. The actols certainly a smart choice for Chan's shoes.”
