TOWN CARRIERS

Union Favours Bringing Under Transport Act By Telegraph—Press Association. AUCKLAND, March 15. A proposal that motor transport be brought under the provisions of the Transport Licensing Regulations will be introduced at a conference of New Zealand drivers’ unions in Wellington, starting on March 30, by a remit from the Auckland union. The question may also form the subject of a deputation to the Minister of Transport. _ . . The responsibility for issuing licences in centres now rests with local authorities. It is contended that under this‘system licences are issued without regard to whether the licensee is capable of operating on an economic basis. “We ‘believe that the bringing of town operators under the Motor Transport Act would eliminate the unnecessary waste caused by overlapping and dead mileage,” said Mr. L. G. Matthews, secretary of 'the Auckland union today. He said that in Auckland carriers’ stands at all times of the day had trucks standing idle for hours on end.
