HAUGHTY WINNER’S PROGRAMME

To Run In Mile If Jockey Can Make Weight TOMORROW’S ST. LEGER FIELD (By The Watches.) Mr. T. Coltmau said yesterday that Haughty Winner would definitely start in the Thompson Handicap it A. b. nans could do the weight. Moderate Form. The largest field of the day at Irentbam tomorrow is in the trial I late, in which the elimination of Yours Truly by his win on Saturday leaves 20 runners. In spite of the big field very few of the horses have any form that would suggest they have bright prospects. Previous Winners. The Highweight field for Saturday contains two winners of the same class of event at the January meeting, Bumble and Prime Quality, and both over the same distance as Saturday’s race. The quality of the field is not strong, and Lustral might be a possible upsetting lactor. He was not suited by the track at Carterton on Saturday, but was finishing on against Silver River, whose best form is good. ■ The St. Leger. The St. Leger this year has not drawn a strong field and on form Beaupartir is entitled to solid favouritism. These events sometimes have unexpected results, mainly because of the false pace at which they are run and the inability of jockeys to realize that to go to the front when settled down and force a true-run race is often the wisest policy. In tomorrows field, though not in the same form class as Beaupartir, Old Bill, Coronation, Capricious and Peerless have claims to stay-, ing ability, though the recent showing ot Peerless at Taranaki was not encouraging. Capricious has w°n over a mile and two furlongs and a half and is out of a Wellington Cup winner. Win for Brabant. Brabant, by Vaals from the Rossendale mare, Roselove, the last horse imported to South Africa by >Sir J. B. Robinson, recently beat that country’s champion. Hesperus, in the Old Year Handicap, of £4OO. A year ago Brabant was expected to win the rich Metropolitan Handicap, but he bolted round the course before the event and, though he started in the race for the big prize, he was not placed. He made a good showing, however, as he made the pace throughout and led up to within a short distance of the winning post. The former New Zealander was then presented to his trainer by the baronet, and ran in his colours on making his recent reappearance. Hesperus, who is rated very highly in South Africa and is shortly to be sent back to England to race there in South African interests, carried 10.7 in his meeting with. Brabant over the seven furlongs, as against Brabant’s 7.2. Sir J. B. Robinson, who has imported quite a number o£ Horses to South Africa from New Zealand, is due to arrive in the Dominion .again shortly, accompanied by Lady Robinson and his Bister, Miss Robinson, each of whom race borges in their respective ownerships. N.Z. Interest. Ono of the present crop of two-year-olds being trained in England for the wealthy American racing woman, Miss Dorothy Paget, has a New Zealand interest. This filly is by Allagash, a 'halfbrother to Blandford. The dam is the six-year-old mare Stourbridge Fair, recently sent to New Zealand and included in the shipment of mares to be sold at Trentham on Saturday next. Stourbridge Fair is a rarely-bred mare as she is by the Two Thousand Guineas winner Ellangowan, who was by the Derby winner Lembeng from Lammermuir, by another Derby winner in Supstar, from Montem, by still another Derby winner in Ladas. On the dam's side Stourbridge Fair, like many of the greatest mares of the present day, descends from Carbine’s famous Derby winning son Spearmint, and her dam is by Chaucer, another famous eire of brood mares. Like the other five mares in this shipment, Stourbridge Fair is due to foal in September- to tie French-bred sire, Lang Bian. This horse is royally bred. His sire, Massine, was one of the best stayers of recent times and after proving the colt of the year in France, where he won the Derby and other races, he went to England and triumphed in the Ascot Gold Cup, being one of only two French horses to score in that great staying race in the past 100 years. Since going to the stud Massine, who is the greatest living descendant in tail male of St. Simon, has been twice champion sire in France, and this year is the sire of the Oaks winner, Feerie, and one of the favourites for the Derby. His Derby winning son, Mieuxce, as well as Lang Bian, is now at the stud in England, and has a full book this season at a fee of .300 guineas. Lang Bian is out of a daughter of Tracery in Forest Track. She is the dam of three winners and is bred from Forest Lassie, winner of the Royal Stakes, and the second dam of Sandsprite, runner-up for the Derby in 1937. Forest Track is by the great Isonomy horse Isinglass, from that famous race and brood mare Baroness la Fleehe, the granddam of Beau Pere and Gay Shield, by the trippie crown winner Ladas, from the Oaks, St. Leger and Ascot Gold Cup winner, La Fleehe, one of St. Simon’s most famous daughters. Further Sale Entries.

Alexander is sending down half a dozen mares from Maxwell, all in foal to that stayingbred sire, Captain Bunaby, the sire of Bunsby Gaze, Link Divine, Jack Horner, International, and Capris, all good winners in Australia, Qapris having won the A.J.C. Epsom Handicap.
