I ALARMING SPREAD OF CONVOLVULUS
Cannot Be Branded As Noxious Weed Dominion Special Service. HASTINGS, March 15. The alarming spread of convolvulus weed in and around Hastings and Napier boroughs is causing many householders a good deal of worry. Application to the Department of Agriculture and various institutes by the Hastings Borough Council. which is seeking means of bringing the weed under control, have produced suggestions which when tried out prove only a palliative and do not effectively destroy the, root. Experiments are now being carrie’d out by the Hastings borough engineer, but the efficacy of the treatment cannot be assessed till next spring, when spring growth begins. In the meantime the authorities cannot brand convolvulus as a noxious weed as, with no known efficacious method of control in existence, it would place considerable hardship on owners of infected sections and farms. The fact remains, however, that the weed is rapidly spreading, and with a very large number of sections in both towns badly affected it will soon be necessary for the authorities to take decisive steps to deal with the pest.
