Street Names And House Numbers
Sir, —In “The Dominion” of March 9, an interesting interview appeared ■between a reporter and some taxidrivers with reference to the above heading, in which the taxi-drivers voiced the difficulties they experience in finding certain streets and houses through some streets being badly named, or not named at all, and houses having no numbers. Wellington city is Veil known for its bad sign boards in many streets, and for streets having no sign boards at all. A taxi-driver or a stranger to a locality where he is looking for a certain street often has the greatest difficulty in finding it. Many short streets intersecting main streets have a sign board with name of street at one end of the street only, at the other end there is no name ar all. Anyone looking for the street at the end where there is no name has the greatest, difficulty in finding it. Every street should be najfeed at both ends, and where streets intersect they should have names on sign boards on each side of the street. Badly numbered houses or houses having no numbers at all, present the same difficulties as streets. The remedy for this state of things is simple. It should be made compulsory for every house owner to pur the' number of his house on his gate. Perhaps the cost of naming and renaming streets, and replacing names where'they are washed out or obliterated would be considerable, but considering the great help and benefit it would be to the public generally, it would be money well spent.—l am, etc.. SIGN POST. Wellington, March 14.
