More than 70.000 miles of roads in Great Britain are now protected from ugly, unregulated building development by an Act passed iu 1035 restricting the so-called ribbon development. The Act bad an immediate effect iu bringing under the control of the highway authorities all development along 43,000 miles of classified roads and since then the Minister of Transport has approved of resolutions submitted by the highway authorities giving the same protection to a further 29,000 miles of road.
