St. Patrick’s College Old Boys’ Association
ELECTION OF OFFICERS
The eleventh annual meeting of the St. Patrick’s College Ohl Boys’ Association was held in St. Patricks’ Col-
lege, Cambridge Terrace, on Monday. The retiring president, Mr. A. M. Ongley, Palmerston North, presided.
An apology for unavoidable absence was received from Mr. D. W. Madden
and a telegram of good wishes was received from Messrs. L. J. Coakley and T. Boyce, Auckland.
Moving the adoption of the annual report and balance sheet, Mr. Ongley congratulated the executive ami members of the association on another successful year. He particularly stressed the success of the complimentary dinner tendered to the Very Rev. Father Schaefer, S.M., during the year. Mr. Ongley said be also noted with pleasure that the old boys’ cricket and football clubs bad had successful years. He added t hat lie also wished to thank the president of the Wellington College Old Boys’ Association, Mr. L. McKenzie. for his very tine gesture in presenting the “Friendly Cup” to perpetuate the annual match between the “older” old boys of the two colleges. Mr. Ongley stressed the value of this cup in cementing the real friendship which existed between the old boys of the two schools.
Mr. Ongley said he noted the improvement in the finances of the associa-, tion which he hoped would be maintained. In view of the Centennial year and tlie National Eucharistic Congress, he appealed to all old boys to become financial members and encourage others to do so.
The report and balance-sheet were adopted. In declaring Mr. D. W. Madden, of Wellington, elected president, Mr. Ongley, having completed the maximum period of three years in that office, paid tribute to the enthusiasm Mr. Madden had always shown in tlie affairs of the association, he having held the offices of treasurer, chairman of the executive, and vice-president. A special vote of thunks and appreciation of the long ami valuable services rendered to the association by the retiring treasurer. Mr. M. P. O’Connor, was carMotions authorizing the formation of branches of the associations in centres outside Wellington were passed.
Rectors’ Remarks.
The Very Rev. Father A. Lysaght, S.M.. 8.A., rector of St. Patrick's College, Wellington, said he hoped that during the Eucharistic Congress the association would do everything possible, tor tlie entertainment of old boys visiting Wellington. Referring to the work being done on the college grounds, he expressed hiß thanks to Mr. B. F. Kelly for'the great assistance he bad given to the college in this way. Father Lysaght also acknowledged an anonymous donation of z 100 toward the improvements. He stressed that ’the facilities would be for the benefit ot old boys as well as present boys. The Very Rev. Father J. J. Kennedy. S.M., M.A., rector of St. Patrick’s College, Silverstream, also spoke, expressing his pleasure at the unanimity of the meeting on the question of the establishment of branches. He was pleased that old boys of Silverstream used the facilities of the association and joined with the old boys of St. Patrick’s, city. They were old boys of Marist. colleges, and as such had the same ideals. Father Kennedy congratulated the sports masters of both colleges on the number of old boys who had gained representative honours in different parts of the-Dominion and in all branches of sport. On the motion of Mr. J. R. Jeffries the meeting placed on record its appreciation of the great services of the retiring president to the association. Mr. Ongley, he said, had shown his interest in the affairs of the association in a practical manner by making many trips from Palmerston North, often at great inconvenience, in order to be. present at gatherings. The following officers were elected : — Joint patrons, the Very Rev. Father A. Lysaght. S.M.. 8.A., rector of St. Patrick's. Wellington, and the Very Rev. Father .1. J. Kennedy, S.M.. M.A., rector of St. Patrick’s, Silverstream ; president, Mr. D. W. Madden; vice-presidents, Messrs. L. J. Coakley (Auckland), B. McCarthy, K.S.G. (Hawera), F. MeParland (Napier), A. L. W. Gallien (Dunedin), and A. M. Ongley (Palmerston North) ; lion, secretary, Mr. M. J. Kennedy, jnn.; hon. treasurer, Mr. B. Gastpioinc; committee, Messrs. L. A. Chapman. M. P. O'Connor, J. Doolau, J. Jefferies and E. Todd.
