Good Start With Year's Work A good start for the year with two well-attended meetings in February was made by the Society for the Protection of Women and Children in Wellington. At a recent meeting the secretary reported being approached by the wharf police ar the request of the ship’s officers of the Waiiganella to inspect Hie dummy funnel in which a stowaway had been housed at night ami during ports of call. It was pointed out that any ship allowing a stowaway to leave was fined £lOO. The secretary reported that these conditions were reasonably comfortable. The Minister of Internal Affairs, Mr. Parry, was thanked for a grant made to the society.
A serious matter, and one for grave reflection as to its causes, was the apparent increase in sexual offences. The police had been asked to maintain special supervision in parks and public places and this was receiving attention.
Many cases coining under the heading of cruelty and harsh treatment of wives and children were reviewed, and action taken when necessary. T] le visits for the month were, In. 133; out, 53; letters for tile month being, m 65; out, 171.
