BRITISH BATTLESHIP FOR AUSTRALIA?
May Be Used To Convey
Duke Of Kent
MORAL AND STRATEGIC ADVANTAGES SYDNEY, March 12. Though not based on any official information from London, there is a strong belief among Federal Ministers that arrangements will be made for the Duke and Duchess of Kent to travel to Australia in a British battleship when they come here in November. It would cause no surprise if H.M.S. Repulse, which is being specially fitted to carry the King and Queen to North America in the middle of the year, were used afterward to bring the Duke and Duchess to Australia. It is recognized that it. would be difficult to make binding arrangements at this stage. To detach a capital ship from tlie Royal Navy would depend largely on the international situation later this year. There would be moral and strategical advantages in sending a battleship to Australia, apart from its appropriateness to the arrival of the Duke of Kent as Governor-General. It is even suggested that if a battleship were used for tins purpose it might be detained in Australian waters for several months.
