WEATHER SITUATION
Anticyclone Covering Dominion Following is the weather report and the forecast for winds and seas issued by the Meteorological Office, Wellington, for the 24 hours ending 3 p.m. today:— General situation: An anticyclone covers New Zealand with its centre to the east. A depression is located over the western Tasman Sea, but appears to be losing intensity. Forecast: — Winds: Light to moderate but freshening north-east to north-west, but a change to south-westerlies possible during today in the southern portion of-the South Island. Seas (New Zealand waters) : Slight to moderate, but later rising somewhat in Cook Strait. Eastern Tasman Sea: Light to moderate but freshening north-east to north-west winds, changing to southerlies later in the southern portion. Seas slight to moderate, but rising in western areas. (General forecast appears above leading article.) YESTERDAY’S WEATHER / Wellington: Fine with a light easterly breeze. Morning cool but afternoon mild. Maximum temperature yesterday, 69.3 degrees; minimum ou Sunday night, 47 degrees, At 3.30 p.m. yesterday, temperature 67.8 degrees and barometer reading 30.298 inches. Palmerston North: Bright sunshine, blue sky, passing clouds and a light east wind.
Masterton: Fine, but rather cool with passing cloud and a light southwesterly breeze. Wanganui: Blue sky, scattered clouds and a light westerly breeze. Sea smooth. The barometer reading at 4.30 p.m. was 30.35 inches. New Plymouth: Partly overcast and sultry early, but clearing to bright sunshine in the afternoon. The barometer at 5 p.m. read 30.10 inches. Waipukurau: 21 pleasant day with bright sunshine, a maximum temperature of 72 degrees aud a barometer reading of 30.34 inches. Napier and Hastings: Overcast during the morning, with a light easterly breeze. The weather cleared at midday, a moderate north-easterly wind springing up. Cool temperature. Auckland: Fine aud sunny with a moderate to fresh easterly wind, the maximum temperature being <1 degrees. Barometric pressure rose during the mornlug and the reading at 5 p.m. was 30.27 inches. Christchurch: Clear and sunny, but the warmth was tempered by a strong easterly wind. The maximum temperature was 62.4 degrees and the barometer at 5 p.m. read 30.249 inches and was falling slowly. Dunedin: Fine and mild with a slight breeze from the south. The barometer fell to 30.30 inches and remained steady, and the maximum temperature was 65 degrees.
