INTOXICATED DRIVER FINED £l5

Admitted Having 11 Drinks

A fine of £l5 was imposed on David Whiteman, aged 26, labourer, Upper Hutt, by Mr. A. M. Goulding, S.M., in the Magistrates’ Court, Petone, yesterday on a charge of being intoxicated in charge of a car. Whiteman was prohibited from obtaining a driving licence for IS months and ordered to pay medical expenses, £l/1/-. He consented to take out a prohibition' order for a year and was given a month in which to pay the fine. Senior-Sergeant H. C. D. Wade said' that Constable J. L. Moore investigated a collision outside the Petone Working Men’s Club on Saturday. He found that Whiteman had driven a car into-a parked car. He had then run off but was brought back and detained in the club. Dr. R. A. Bakewell certified him intoxicated. He admitted having had nine beers in Upper Hutt and two at the club. He said that he felt the effects of the liquor and went outside and sat in a friend’s car. This was in gear, and when he put his foot on the starter it shot forward, striking another car. For driving without a licence Whiteman was convicted and discharged.
