RESTRICTING USE OF MOTOR-CYCLES
Petone Borough Council’s Views The question of whether restrictions should be placed on the use of motorcycles lu the interests of road safety was considered recently by the bylaws committee of the Petone Borough Council, following the receipt of a letter from the Commissioner of Transport, Air. G. L. Laurenson, asking the council’s views on the subject. The committee decided that it was out of the council’s province to suggest restrictions, and this view was supported at the council meeting last night. The bylaws committee reported also that the following motion was carried; That this committee views with alarm the increasing toll of life taken by motor-cycles, but does not feel justified in passing any comment on restrictions that should be imposed. Any restriction that the Transport Department feels justilied in imposing would be welcomed, however. The chairman of the bylaws committee, Cr. A. Al. Alacfarlane, said the committee did not see its way clear to suggest restrictions, though it had its views on the subject of noisy motorcycles. Cr. Alacfarlane added that provision should be made for restrictions, but the committee thought this was a question best left to the capacity and the wisdom of the department. “7Ve know,” he added, "that motor-cycles' take more toll on the roads than other vehicles.”
Ur. J. Huggan: I would declare an open season for motor-cycles at 2 o'clock in the morning in Jackson Street. 1 would shoot them'all.
