Shandon Club Opens Season SEVENTY PAIRS TAKE PART The 1939 winter golf season was opened by the Shandon club on Saturday when 70 pairs took part in a mixed foursome bogey event which was won by Mrs. e mulay and W. K. Tustin with the good card of 2 up. . J . , , The weather conditions . were ideal, bright sunshine and cloudy periods alternating all day. The Summer Cup, which was played for during the summer season, was presented to the winner, 1. Other good cards were returned by A. J. llobsoii. J E. Nicolaus and K. E. W ifcains all of whom finished 1 down. v’stableford, fourball bestball event resulted in a win for It. A. Comerford and T J Gallagher, with 4-1 points; the run-ners-up being A. E. Clarke and W. W. McCormick, with 42 points. An Easter tournament .will be held by the Shandon club on April 8, v ana 10. The principal' event on the programme will be the Easter championship and the Shandon handicap, both over 06 holes. The qualifying rounds will be played on Saturday, the first and second rounds on the ‘Sunday, and the semifinals and finals on the Monday. There "’>ll also be flight competitions and handicap events each day. (Entries will close for the iEa=ter championship and the Shandon handicap on April 1, and post entries will be accepted for the other events. Judgeford Club A fourball bestball bogey competition on the Judgeford links on Sunday was won by E. Dalton and B. Dalton, with 7 up. Next came J. C. Redward and N. Cathie, 2 up; K. Rattray and D. Hennessv, 1. down; H. Aitken and J. McKay, 1 down; R. Hill and W. Martin, 2 down. Karori Club
The Karori club held a very successful opening day on Saturday. Because of the inclement weather, only about 100 players attended, but the course played extremely well. T. 1 j - The patron, Sir Alexander Roberts, officially opened the season. In presentin'- the prizes, he commented on the great improvement in the course and wished the club a very successful season. - A mixed Canadian foursome was played. Mr. and Mrs. Anderson winning with the excellent score of 68 net. G. Bauchlon and Miss Price came second, with 69 net. For those men unable to arrange for women partners, a single bogey was played, C. Acheson easily winning .with 5 up. J. McKenzie came second, with a card showing all square. , On Sunday morning a fourball bogey/ was nlaved. and was won by A. H. Monk (16)'and C. A. Briggs (20), with a card of 8 up. A. G. "Williams (7) and G. McCallum (23) came next, with 4 up. A fourball stableford in the afternoon was won bv T. Rogers (9) and K. Barron (12), with 42 points. Next came E. Lash'(s) and A. G. "Williams (7), 41; and H. Eton (16) and G. Lauchlan (21), 40. Hutt Club A stableford event on the Hutt links on Saturday was won bv J. S. Bark with 35-3-38, on a count back from A. B. Pope (12), 8 up. Then came E. N. Smith (6) and P. J. R. lordham (7), 5 up; E. Morgan (5) and S. C. Taylor (2), 4 up; W. C. AVcdderspoon (8J and J. Flanagan (5), 4 up. Several good scores were recorded over the weekend, G. T. Rapley covering the course in 70. Athletic Club The Athletic Golf Club’s season was opened on Sunday by Mr. F. McKeeu, M.P., who addressed a good muster of members. A eanadiap foursome played in the morning was won by Mr. and Mrs. Parker, 47 net. C. Livingstone and 8. Deslandes were second, 51 net. In the afternoon a novelty competition was held, nine holes being played with putter only. The winner was W. Blanchfield, 23 net, with iS. Deslandes second, 25 net.

Collins, captain of the Wairarapa Golf Club, who has been one of New Zealand’s most prominent amateur golfer.-' for the past 17 years, will leave for England on a holiday visit on April G. lie intends competing in the British amateur championship tournament. He will be accompanied on the trip by Mrs. Collinswho is also a well-known golfer. •
