TOUR OF AUSTRALIA
University Debating Team The New Zealand University Students’ Association has received advice that the Australian National Union of ■Students has adopted a proposal whereby a New Zealand University debating and lecturing team will tour Australia this year, and an Australian team will return the visit in 19-10. The team will consist of two students. The New Zealand team will leave for Sydney about the middle of June, and will return six weeks later. The team will thus spend approximately five weeks in Australia. Visits will be paid to five universities (Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Adelaide, Hobart), to Canberra and to several country cities. The team will debate with university and other teams, and will also lecture on New Zealand and aspects of New Zealand life. Members of the team will also lead informal discussions at the universities. The students’ associations in the various centres have called for applications from students wishing to make the trip. These applications will be considered by the students' executive and debating society at each college, and the executive will nominate any students who are considered suitable to undertake the tour. These nominations will be dealt with at the annual meeting of the New Zealand University Students’ Association to he held at Easter, At this meeting delegates from all universities will select the team.
The members of the team will also act as N.Z.U.S.A. representatives in Australia, and will discuss further schemes for co-operation with the Australian universities. There are prospects of visits by sporting teams, and also travel tours by student parties, but as yet no definite decisions have been made.
