RESOLUTE BATTING BY ENGLAND

Test Against Africa In Second Week RAIN PREVENTS PLAY ON SATURDAY By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright (Received March 12, 6.30 p.m.) DURBAN, March 11. Because of rain there was no play today on what was to have been the eighth day of the final cricket Test between England and South Africa. Yesterday the English batsmen resolutely faced their stupendous task of scoring 696 runs in their final innings. After making 316 ip their first innings, England’s score at the close of play yesterday was 253 for one wicket (Edrich not out 107, Gibb not out 78). South Africa made 530 and 481.

Except for a few spots, which were not really venomous, the wicket did not help the bowlers. Edrich was in splendid form, driving beautifully. Hutton was out during the morning session for 55, and at lunch the score was 88 for one (Gibb 22, Edrich 10). Stumps were drawn early because of the bad light. Details: — SOUTH AFRICA. First innings 530 Second innings 481 ENGLAND. First innings 316 Second Innings. Hutton, b. Mitchell 55 Gibb, not out 78 Edrich, not out 107 Extras 43 Total for one wicket 253 Bowling Analysis: Newson took no wickets for 28 runs; Gordon, none for 58; Langton, none for 67; Dalton, none for 41; Mitchell, one for 46.

24 HOURS’ PLAY Proposal For Future Tests CAPE TOWN, March 10. The South African Board of Control, with the idea of avoiding draws through loss of time, is proposing to the M.C.C. that all Tests should be over 24 hours of actual play and nominally set down for four days with two extra days if necessary, because of the conditions. The board is also proposing that there should be one toss, after which the teams should bat in rotation in the remaining Tests.
