CORONATION OF THE POPE
Crowd’s Enthusiasm In St. Peter’s Square (Received Alarch 13, 1.30 a.m.) A’ATICAiN CITY, March 12. Ten thousand Italian troopers patrolled the streets- leading to St. Peter’s Square before dawn today and prevented those not holding tickets from entering the square to witness the coronation of the Pope before the 50,000 ticket-holders. Tickets inscribed “Gratis” were selling for £lO each. The coronation began at 7.15 a.m. The Pope was escorted to the vestment hall, where he was greeted with the College of Cardinals. There he donned his vestments comprising a stole, a short red and gold mantle and a mitre. The spectators’ cheers, applause and shouts of “Long live the Pope” almost drowned the choir as the Pope, seated in the Chair of State, was carried into the basilica. Signor Mussolini. wa_s absent from the coronation at which Count Ciauo, Italian Foreign Alinister, is representing the Government. Herr Hitler was represented by the German Ambassador at the Vatican, Doctor von Bergen.
