RICCARTON NOTES

Horses For Trentham Gallop Dominion Special Service. CHRISTCHURCH, March 11. Light rain fell throughout training hours at Riccarton today, but there was no interruption in the work allottcil horses to race at Trentham next week. The No. 1 grass track was again available for galloping, anti though it hail had a good soaking, the surface was still firm, anil times were comparatively fast, specially along the back stretch. The fastest sprint of the mornin" was accomplished on this stretch. Density reeling off half a mile in 48, the fin-t two furlongs taking 23 3-5, and three 35 1-5. Density had her Railway Handicap weight. seven stone, up. and was assisted by a following wind. but. nevertheless,, the performance in the circumstances was brilliant. The only other sprint along the back was executed by I.aily Leigh and Mo-or-sotis. who ran five furlongs in 1.1 3-5. the last four in 49 3-5. They finished abreast, and the manner in which Moorsotis held on to hie speedy mate right to the finishing line was very impressive. Royal Chief, joined by Prudent Prince at five furlongs, covered seven furlongs in 1.20 3-5, the last four in 51 3-5. They also finished abreast. Royal Chief will be ridden in the Thompson Handicap by 15. Tf. Morris, but should the track be at all heavy, he may not be produced. A Likely Pair. Wild Talk ami Great Flight were together throughout seven furlongs in 1.31. the last four in 53. Both should earn further distinction at Trcnthain. Queen of Song, looking exceptionally bright, strode over a mile in 1.50. She was shipped north today in company with Top Row and Aranui. Trench Fight ran a mile in 1.40 3-u. the first half in 50 3-5. ami Settlement and Capricious had a similar task in 1.4 b. the second half in 5-1. Haughty Winner and Argentic went

I well over seven furlongs in 1.29. the first I three in 37 3-5. . | Kilrobe led Dictate early m a similar ' gallop, but there was nut king between I them at the end. The first three furlongs I took 36 1.-5 and the full distance 1.29 I ' Waka easily accounted for Rebel Queen I over seven furlongs in 1.3.1 1-5, the last four in 52 3-5. Wild Career and berriby ran ball; a mile in 49 3-5. The former will be ridden by A. Messervy at Trentham. Jumpers in Action. There was a good- deal of ‘jumping, mostly by novices. Sky Pilot and Katpca jumped a round of the steeplechase fences. Wexford Bridge following them at an interval. All jumped well, specially Sky Pilot, whose lengthy absence has not affected his ability. Kaipea, whose sire is a Greyspear colt, shows a lot of promise, and Wexford Bridge gave a very encouraging display. Redolent’gave a lead to Court Yard over the'Steeplechase brush fences, but the latter refused to jump the first and later got over two more brushes, and at the second attempt jumped the first well.. Recollection did not make any mistakes in jumping four brush hurdles, and Pladie and Bright Prospect made a satisfactory showing over the same course. The latest newcomer to the ranks is Lord Hawke, who has been a failure on the flat since being acquired by Mr. J. Douglass, of Waikouaiti. last spring. He was tried over two brush hurdles, and, though baulking several times, be got through his task satisfactorily for a beginner, Bonnie Rollox was responsible lor a brilliant display over four hurdles, Black Fox following at a long interval. The former is considered quite sound, and if ,hc remains so he will be in strong evidence during the winter. Black Fox did not shape well and lost his rider when he scrambled over the third fence.
