GALTEEMORE’S CUP
Carterton Annual Meeting BUNNY MEMORIAL TO FLAMMARION Substantial Decrease In Returns (By The Watcher.) Unfavourable weather, cold and showery? marred the annual meeting of the Garterton Racing Club at Clareviile on Saturday, the attendance being badly affected. It was unfortunate for the elub that the break in the summer conditions, though so welcome universally, should have come in the few hours prior to the meeting. The race track itself was greatly benefited by the rain and provided good going. As was only to be expected, Trentham stables had a good innings, winning six of the eight events, and also securing the bulk of the place money. Siegmund was the favourite for the County Cup, but was decisively beaten by Galteemore, who scored a popular and overdue win for .Mr. J. O’Brien. 'The Bunny Memorial was won by Flammarion. The totalizator showed a substantial decrease, the £6245/10/- put through showing a decline on last year of £o3<4 10/-. Titter's First Win.
Titter scored a convincing win in the maiden race. She lay third on the rail in behind Equity and Gothic to the straight, and then eame forward and won comfortably. Gothic just lield on for second from Barabbas, who was out well but, unable' to go the early pace, had drifted back to last at the turn.. He finished on again in the straight, but was never going like a winner at any stage. Equity and Dissipation were next, ~, The class was poor, but Titter, ridden in behind., finished on 'better than usual. Won AU the Way. Silver River led all the way to win the Highweight. He was always travelling freely, and though they closed up on him in the straight he was too good for the field. There was a close finish for second, heads only separating Lustra! on the outer from Happy Heels on the rail, and in between them Cricket and Great Quex. This is Silver River’s first win since joining TI. Telford’s stable, and also his first since he dead-heated in the Champion Hack Cup at Te Aroha 12 months ago. Galtecmore Too Good. Galteemore fairly outpaced Siegmund all the way in the Wairarapa County Cup. Siegmund got closer to Jiim as they approached the straight, but Galteemore then went right away again and won easily by several lengths. The other pair were outclassed. The turning course may not altogether have suited Siegmund, but fie had every chance and was not good enough. Galteemore is an improved horse, and won impressively, going strongly at the finish of a fast-run race. Three on End. Trebor made it three on end when he won the Carterton Hack. He won only narrowly but well, coming from third place in behind Kurrawong and Mother-in-Law. Kurrawong, stuck to Trebor in the straight, but could not beat him. Phil came through and joined Mother-in-Law and Prediction for the third place, Mc-thcr-in-Law getting the verdict from Phil. Trebor won more easily than the margin indicated. A Solid Finish.
The favourite Hinerawe endeavoured to win all the way in the Gladstone Hack but Rowana got to her in the .straight and finally Yours Truly put in a claim which was too good for them both. Yours Truly, who pulled hard early, was last at the half-mile and he put in a very solid finish to win going away. His success renders him ineligible for the Trial Plate on the opening day at Wellington. Flaminarion’s Memorial. Despite hanging badly round the turn and into the straight Flammarion was able to win the Bunny Memorial from the outsider Mister Quex, who came up on his inner. There was not much in it at the finish, but Flammarion finished stronger. Debham, who was with Flammarion in front, got pushed off the course' when the winner hung out. Liane coining on for third, with the favourite Export unable to do better than fourth. Silver River failed to stand up to two races and was never dangerous, despite being given a great opportunity on the inner when the leaders ran wide. Winner’s Good Finish. Finishing with an irresistible late run, Screen Lord cut down Kurrawong and Daisy Chain to win going away in the Electric Hack. Kurrawong did not get a good run in the race and looked unlucky not to win, though Screen Lord’s finishing effort was very convincing. Daisy Chain had every chance. Hot Favourite Beaton. A red hot favourite in Drachma was beaten in the concluding event, in which all but Drachma and Diareus had raced previously on the day. As at Bulls, Drachma was allowed to drift to the rear and when he came round fast on the outer on the turn his supporters had every confidence, but Mother-in-Law, who had previously taken charge from Diareus, hung on just too well for him. Titter was a fair third and was a bit unlucky, as when Diareus went back he did so very quickly and Titter got on his heels, neaxly coming down. Under the circumstances she did well.
