WOMAN EQUALS WORLD RECORD

100 Yards Auckland Event

MISS LUMLEY BEATS MISS NORMAN By Telegraph—Press Association. AUCKLAND, March 12. A performance equalling the world record for a woman athlete over 100 yards was registered by Miss Doreen Lumley on Saturday afternoon when the Auckland provincial junior and

women's amateur athletic championships were decided at Carlaw Park. In clocking 11 seconds Miss Lumley beat the Australian Empire Games winner and record bolder for the distance, Miss. Decima Norman, by only nine inches. The latter had the advantage in the early stages of the contest, but over the last. 40 yards Miss Lumley just managed to gain the lead after an epic struggle. There was no wind at the time of the event and there is no doubt that the performance of Miss Lumley will be recognized. Miss Norman was competing in the broad jump championship when the 100 yards event was due to start, and the fact that she left the former to run may have affected her performance in the sprint.

Miss Norman was outstanding in the broad • jump and 220 yards events, which she won. In the broad jump she registered 17ft. IDMn., a distance that is lOJin better than the New Zealand standard and Ift. 4in. better than that recorded by Miss M. Grindrod, who was second. Running with a short stride and noticeably forward body lean, Miss Norman won the 220 yards championship in the good time for the track of 26 2-ssec. This is 3-ssec. better than the New Zealand standard. Miss Lumley had to be content with second place. There was little between the pair over the first 100 yards, but after that Miss Norman held an advantage which Miss Lumley was unable to challenge and crossed second two feet. away.

Application will be made by the Auckland centre for eleven performances to be recognized as records. At present there are no records established for women’s or junior events in the Auckland province. The events and times for which application will be made are: High jump, junior, W. M. Smeeton, sft. 7in.; shot putt, junior, IV. M. Smeeton, 37ft. o}iu.; 120 yards hurdles, junior, J.' V.
