A Note From " The Hoe. "

Flowering Gums Few sights attract more favourable attention than a flowering gum in full bloom. During, the past few weeks those odd trees which are to be seen round Wellington have been unusually gay with colour, and have aroused the admiration of all who have seen them. The gums are among the most attractive of powering trees, and it is a pity that they are not more generally grown. Because some varieties are very frosttender. the impression has gained currency that they are all “difficult” subjects. Such, of course, is far from the truth. There are several varieties which are hardy and quite easily grown in this climate. Among them are eucalyptus campbelli pyriformis (large red flowers), macrocarpa (dwarf, with grey foliage). The gums look particularly well when planted on a sunny hillside, and indeed seem to thrive best in such a situation.
