WANGANUI CUP
Speed Narrowly Beaten By Aga Khan
TOTALISATOR RISE
Porotiti Comfortably in Flying Handicap (By Telegraph.—From “The Watcher, 1 ’) ' Wanganui, January 31. The summer meeting of the Wanganui Jockey Clqb. openefl. tq-qay in fine, hot, weather: In’ a ]see’n contest for the Wangimui Cup, H which has not keen run since Ip the Shade won in 1930, Aga Khan narrowly defeated Speed, with the favourite. lied Manfred, third. The Flying Handicap was wop comfortably by Porotiti, with Cadland and Bodyline ip the minor places, the favourite, Mother Superior, being only fourth, There' was a fair attendance and the totalisator handled £9353, compared with £5596 for seven races last year, an increase of £3787. The track wag firm and fast. K. Voitre was riding in good form, scoring a hat triek in the last three rates, which included the winning double, Sir Spear Comfortably. Sir Spear, secopd favourite but wail backed, had a comfortable win in the Westmere Hack Hurdles. He lay handy to the pacemakers, Headland and Conference to the turn, when he assumed command to rpn home an easy winne I ’, with Headland weakening to a moderate third, Ythan was fourth and Blacksmith further back. The pacemakers cpt. each other’s throat all the way, but While a change in tactics may have been to th? advantage of Conference he would have been troubled fo beat the. winner., A: than, the favourite, was well back early and while he made up some ground he never looked like getting any money. - Won All the Way. The Kai Iwi Maiden favourite. Reiyar, drew No. 1 and scared an albthe, way win. Lady Hoariri went with him for a furlong. Dawn Princess heading the bunch, but Reipar drew right away over the last three furlongs, Dawn Princess hanging oii for second from E(ira. who was making up ground well at the finish, Panlpff was foprth, followed by Wind' soreen. Makoi. and Amante. t_. The winner’s form suggested his success, which was very conifortably achieved. Dawn Princess appeared a trifle eore, Earn was finishing well and should be suited by a longer journey. The others showed nothing worthy of comment. Juvenile Handicap. Round Up, who drew No. 2 in the juvenile race, began well, and though he was headed ip the first furlong by Surprise Item and Good Conduct, he was always: travelling weh, lie allowed this
pair to lead hiin until making for the straight, where ’Surprise Item began to stop quickly. Round Up soon ran past Good Condjict and ran home a comfortable winner.” Prevail cpme through in the Iqst furlong for second, just beating. Lowerburg, who came right from the rear. Goqd Conduct was fourth, followed by Sergia, Grateful, and Matrimony. Round Up was too smart and seasoned for his opponents. Prevail drew No, 1, but she frnTied to jump away, Pl’ she might have woi), Very hard to beat, Lowen'burg was as usual sjow to find his feet, and he was a bad last on the turn, fie put m gome great work toward the' finish, hut was riving away too much ground, Good Conduct and Surprise Item showed pace, and should improve, Victory for Hot Favourite. The Victory Hack Handicap, for apprentice riders, saw Fersen a hot order, lie got off well, and lay. in behind the pgcemakers, St. Clara and Silk Sox, to. the' straight, where he challenged, and ran home a comfortable winner from Silk Sox, who finished better than St, Clara. Boudoir Was a moderate fourth, Fersen, who claimed a 51b- allowance, always had the drop on the pacemakers, who did not assist their prospects by cut-throat tactics. Tayforth Hack. The favourites in the Tayfortli Hack, Glepvane and Coleqso, were poorly placed early. Jubilee Song and Onewhetu jumped r’vay well, and were always in front „of Wasteland, the latter being actually the first to show out, Qlenvane and Colenso were a fair way back by the time they settled down, and although Glenvane got a good run through on the rails from the six to the half, he got no further opening xjptil the straight, by which time the lejider was heading for home a winner. . ~ Jubilee Song really won comfortably, as Onewhetu weakened and only just held on for second from Glenvane, with Wasteland fourth, followed by Colenso. Midian, and Bonnie Vale. The winner showed form at Wellington, but he was fortunate to get away so welj as against the bad"luck of the favourites. Glenvane also ran wide into the straight, otherwise he would no doubt have been second. Colenso was never travelling very freely, but Midian came well from the back, being a long way from the front early. 'Wasteland ran a good race. Black Mau was prominent to the half, where he got chopped back. Close Finish for Cup. The 'Wanganui Cup provided a good race, with a very close Apish between Aga Klmil and Speed. Tiger Gain made the pace, and was soon joined by Red Manfred, with Aga Khan and Speed following. Red Manfred led into tae straight, but he was quickly in troubleand the finish lay between Aga Kfiap and Speed. It was a keen struggle, and Aga Khan, ou the inside berth, just won. Red Manfred was a moderate third, with Tiger Gain fourth, followed by, Pamm, Eminept and Plateau, Red'-yiapfred was a warm favourite, but he had no epance with his two finpl challengers, who always had the drop on him. -. Porptjtj W’ ll ® Decisively.
Porotiti scored a very decisive win, in the open sprint, while the favourite. Mother Superior, could, not manage bet-
ter than a poor fourth: From an excellent start Navaho, Mother Superior and Porotiti. ran together in the lead to the turn from Bodyfine and Hunt the Supper, Cadland whipping in. Nayahq was done at the three furlongs, and Porotiti drew out clear into the straight. He wqs never afterward in danger. Cadland came with a rattle at the finish, with Bodylme third and Mother Superior, fourth, followed by Hunt the Slipper and Navaho. The winner ran away from bis opponents. Mother Superior did not flatter at all over t-t--last two furlongs. Comfortable Win for Full Throttle. . Mertv Wav proved a false favourite in the concluding 1 event, never being in a winning position. Collodion and I'u.i Throttle set a fast pace from Arena. Collodion wpa beqten on the turn, anti Full Throttle drew clear. He was nevei afterward likely to lose, winning comfortably from Arena, with Merry M ay a fau third. Queen’s Pride was fourth, the i Debut and Collodion. The winner put,np a smart .performance, and gave Vol ‘ lt .his third successive win ot the nav. Queen’s Pride finished well, aftiy being last to the turn. ! Details of Racing Details of the racing were:— WE’STMIDRB HACK IHJRDDE RACE, of W £110; secoiut £lO, third £5.
