Sex Appeal in Voice
Even the voice in Hollywood must have sex appeal! E. L. Kerr, sound technician at the Paramount Studios, into whose ears have filtered alj the screen’s most famous voices jplaces Mae West, . star of Paramount’s “Belle of the Nineties’’ at the top of his list of people whose voices ‘ have “It.” The popularity of film stars, says Mr. Kerr, is iff direct ratio to the appeal of their screen voices, and Mae West is as popular with the sound men as she is at the box-office. “And you can take it from me that on her voice Miss West depends for much of her success,” asserted Kerr. ;“We learn to know a voice with sex .appeal, and Miss is as distinctive in this as she is in her walk or other personality traits. We do not have to ‘retouch’ her voice. It is the naturalness that gives it its distinctiveness.” Mae West speaks in the same tone of voice, when she has a microphone above her head in a picture scene, as she does in her Hollywood apartment.
