Chaplin’s Mystery Production
TS Charlie Chaplin making a mystery picture? That question has been asked frequently, not only by the Press which has written many editorials on the subject, but his fellow comedians as well are all agog. Only Charlie and his staff of writers know what the story is about, for the theme has been, carefully guarded, the script—the first completed one from which he has ever “shot”—being locked in the company’s vault each night. Even the title has not been disclosed. This much is no mystery, however. Like “City Lights,” the new production will have no dialogue, although it may be implied by a certain effect in a few instances. Original sound effects with a musical score are promised. Charlie will again portray his famous tramp character and Paulette Goddard will have in the feminine lead opposite him the most auspicious part yet given a girl in a Chaplin production—enacting the role of a homeless gamin whom he defends and protects. Other members of the east will be added from time to time as the action progresses. . The new picture will. be released through United Artists.
