BUTTER TRADE
Shipments to New York GUARANTEE BY BOARD Cargo of 31,000 Boxes / Thirty-one thousand boxes of New Zealand butter will be sent to New York by the Port Gisborne, which is due to leave Auckland for America next Wednesday. In addition to this shipment, 15,000 boxes will be dispatched to the American market by ships of the Canadian National Steamships Line scheduled to > sail early. To a large extent this has been possible as a result of freight guarantees given the shipping companies by the New Zealand Dairy Control Board, but when the Executive Commission o£ Agriculture is functioning effectively negotiations of this nature will no doubt come under the jurisdiction of that body. New York has been recently a buyer of New Zealand butter, but under the contracts between the Dairy Board and the shipping companies a ship must have a guaranteed freight of 10,000 boxes before making a call at New York. Two thousand boxes were in sight for the American market, but it looked as if the trade were likely to be lost, for it seemed that there would be difficulty in obtaining the additional 8000 boxes. In order to try and take that quantity off the Londonmarket the Dairy Board decided to guarantee the freight on SOOO boxes. The effect of this was to loosen sales, and as a result the Port' Gisborne sails for New York next-week with 31,000 boxes aboard. In addition to butter the ship will take a certain amount of meat and other New Zealand products, the shipments of which have also been possible through the guarantee given the companies by the Dairy Board. National Steamships Line. In addition to the Port Gisborne, ehips of the Canadian National Steamships Line are sailing at an early date with about 15.000 boxes for the American market. The board is now endeavouring to arrange further shipments to leave In two or three weeks' time under somewbaFsimilar conditions.
