SUSTENANCE PAY
Carterton Council Passes Motion of Disapproval Dominion Special Service. Mastertoil. January 30. As from the beginning of next week all unemployed men within the counties of Wairarapa South and Featherston and in the boroughs of Carterton. Greytown, Featherston and Martinborough will be placed on sustenance wages. In effect, the announcement received from the Unemployment Board, Wellington, virtually brings to an end the employment under the No. 5 scheme in those districts. The Carterton Borough Council last night protested against the decision, contending that the sustenance scheme was inimical to the object of enabling the men to seek private employment and thus be enabled to become permanently independent from relief. Claim Not Upheld. A defended civil action which commenced in the Masterton Magistrate's Court about a fortnight ago and was subsequently adjourned pending inquiries was continued this morning before Mr. J. Miller. S.M. Plaintiff was Thomas Bertram, who claimed the sum of £4O 5/- damages from Bruce McGregor, the claim-arising out of a collision between a car driven by defendant and a motorlorry driven by plaintiff. Judgment was given for defendant, with costs. Mr. R. R. Burridge appeared for plaintiff and Mr. 11. R. Biss for defendant. Cricket Draw. Following is the draw for the continuation of the Wairarapa Cricket Association’s inter-club senior and junior competitions, to be played on Saturday afternoon :—Senior: Lansdowne v.
