WANGANUI RACES

Cup Contest To-day

FORM AND PROSPECTS

(By “The Watcher”.)

Satisfactory fields are carded for the opening of the Wanganui Jockey Club s summer meeting to-day. The principal event is the reinstated Wanganui Cup, which has drawn a useful and evenly balanced field of nine, headed by Red Manfred. The track will be firm and fast, while the betting will be conducted on the single pool system (75-25). Recent form among the hurdlers points to Ythan and Sir Spear, while Conference and Headland should be possibilities. The tracks have lately been on the hard side for Blacksmith, but he might show up. Adventus should be the better for a race. Favourites are likely to be Ythan and Sir Spear (or Conference).

Among the maidens Panloff, Earn, Dawn Princess, JJartiamer, and Reipar have shown form, but there is nothing outstanding. Anything with galloping ability among the unknown lot should be able to win. The draw at the post will also exert an influence on the result. The best backed may be Dawn Princess and Reipar (or Eara). Round Up and Lowenburg are the only whiners among the two-year-olds and they should both be prominent. Some of the others, such as Sergia, Matrimony and Prevail may make a showing, but form prospects are Round Up and Lowenburg. Fersen’s holiday form and his fourth in the Douro Cup after a sloy beginning may see him favourite for the Victory Hack, but St. Clara and Silk Sox will be formidable opponents if they run to their best form, and Boudoir also may be troublesome. At the weights Fersen may be troubled by St. Clara and Silk Sox. Fersen is also in the Cup race.

The largest field of the day is in the hack seven, and this will mean that a good beginning may be half-way to success. as they strike the turn within 50 yards of the start. Form runners are Black Man, 'Wasteland, The Ark. Glenvane, Bonnie Vale, Flamingo, Hunting Queen, Onewhetu, Colenso and Jubilee Song. Luck may play a prominent part but money may come for Colenso and Glenvane. Red Manfred will be well backed in the Cup after his 'Wellington form, and he should be hard to beat. Aga Khan, Tiger Gain, Eminent and Plateau will have friends, while Speed should run well, though the distance is a little further than he has been tried over. Fersen and Pango are good lightweight prospects. The issue looks very open, and it is likely to be a keen and exciting race. Favourites may be Red Manfred and Tiger Gain (or Fersen). There are only six in the Flying Handicap, and after Wellington Mother Superior looks assured of favouritism. Cadland and Porotiti are form prospects, while Bodyline and Navaho should have chances on their recent showings. The best backed may be Mother Superior and Bodyline. In the concluding event, the hack sprint, Discoursive is the only one with no form. Arena -and Collodion are speedy sorts and will be suited by the track, but the possibilities of Full Throttle, Debut and .Queen’s Pride cannot be overlooked The 'favourites may be Arena and Collodion. The card is as follows: —
