SALARY INCREASES

New Tramway Agreement in Christchurch MORE HOLIDAYS ALSO Dominion Special Service. Christchurch, January 30. A new agreement between Hie Christchurch Tramway Board and the Christchurch Tramway Employees’ Union, which provides increases in salary and improved conditions of work, will come into operation on February 1. Tramway men will receive bulkier .envelopes from the first pay Monday in February. Increases for the traffic and works departments will start from February LI. and those for permanent way and night shift men from February 4. A feature of the agreement is that an experiment will be made with a 40-hour week, the reduction of hours going hand in hand with an increase in pay. Increases in pay range fronr-Jd. to as high as 2Ad. au hour. Conductors will receive an additional.ld. an hour, their wages being raised from l/B}d. to. l/9jd. an hour. A Hat rate has been agreed on for motormen, and iu this ease the increase provided for is from 1/9 to 1/10} an hour. In the past there has been extra pay for trolley-bus and one man car drivers, but this provision lias been abolished. A 4d. an lionr has been granted for all broken shift work, and'the eight-hour day will be reverted to. Under the old agreement days of seven and nine hours were worked. Details of Increases. Men employed in the permanent way department will receive! an increase of ljd., the increase being from 1/8} to 1/10 an hour. In the car section the wages of day labourers will be increased from 1/81 to 1/11 an hour, and the hours of work have been reduced from 44 per week to 40 hours. Other rates of pay that will operate in this section are as follow:—Night car adjusters 1/10 to 1/11 an hour, pit men 1/9 to 1/10 an hour, car cleaners 1/8J to 1/9} an hour. Holidays have also been increased in several departments. Permanent way men under the now scheme will receive ten days’ holiday annually instead of seven, and the car shed section will receive eight days. The traffic, night shift and overhead employees will be given the same holidays as last year, the duration varying according to length of service as follows: —One year’s service, eight days; two years’, nine days; three years’, ten days; four years’, eleven days; live years’, twelve days; six years’ and over, thirteen days. ,

The new agreement will be for the term of one year.
