FAREWELL GIFT
Tributes to Inspector J. Lander
A handsome gift of a silver tea service from the police and detectives of Wellington city was presented yesterday to Inspector J. Lander, who will leave to-morrow to take up his new appointment as inspector in charge of the "Wanganui district. In asking Inspector Lander to accept the gift, Superintendent A. T. Emerson paid a tribute to his work and wished him every success in his new sphere. Tributes to the inspector’s sportsmanship and his efficiency as a police officer were paid by other members of the force, including Sub-Inspector J. Carroll and Sub-Inspector C. E. Roache. In returning thanks Inspector Lander recalled that it was over 13 years since lie first came .to Wellington. During all that time, he said, apart from the inevitable worries that fell to the lot of any police officer, whether commissioner or constable, and of which the general public knew little, generally speaking his official life had been it very happy and congenial one. He thanked everyone for the loyal service he had always received and paid a tribute to the harmony that existed between the uniform and detective branches of the service. He had never known a discordant note between the two services, and it was essential that that happy" state of affairs should continue to exist. Before the gathering dispersed three cheers were given for Inspector Lander.
