KILTOWYN AGAIN
Fine Win in Takapuna J.C. Handicap FAVOURITES’ SUCCESS Surprises by Valpai and Lord Willonyx Dominion Special Service. Auckland, January 29. Delightful weather favoured the, conclusion of the Takapuna Jockey Clubs summer meeting at Ellerslie to-day, and there was some good racing. Four favourites were successful, but there were a couple of surprises, Valpai and Lord Willonyx both returning double figures on the win machine. The totalizator handled £30,326, compared with £25,025 for the corresponding day last year, an increase of £5301. The total for the meeting was £53,329/10/-, as against £45,911/10/-, an increase of £7418. Beginning quicker than he did on Saturday, Mazir scored his first win in the Moana Handicap, for which he was a good third fancy to High Tea and Alignment. Mazir was quickly in fr.’it with Lady Diana and stayed on solidly at the finish to withstand a determined challenge from Alignment, who appeared likely to win at the distance. Lady Diana tired iu the last furlong to be a moderate third, ahead of Astarth and High Tea, both of whom had every chance and ran only fairly. Mazir is a solidly made three-year-old gelding by Whirlwind from The Begum, a full-sister to Supremacy, and is endowed with a brilliant turn of speed. Valpai Wins by a Neck. Air Lassie looked like repeating her first day’s success when she ran to the front about half a mile from home in the Waiwera Highweight Handicap, but Valpai outstayed her at the end to win by a neck. The first and second horses came right away from the others, King Tut being seven lengths away third, and The Khedive was a moderate fourth.. Air Lassie might have won if she had not commenced her run so early. The Khedive failed to show any real dash. Surprise by Lord Willotiyx. Lord Willonyx was responsible for a surprise in winning the Suburban Handicap, for which Firebrick and Miss Lu were the favourites. In spite of file fact that he drew the extreme outside at the post, Lord Willonyx was always well placed, and after taking command at the borne turn he just stayed on to win by half a head from Adalene, who ran right up to her best form and battled on very gamely at the finish. Miss Lu and Miss Lorraine ran very creditable races, and the latter is on the improve. Firebrick was disappointing. He was handy on the rails at the turn, but ran about under pressure, and was very wide out at the end. He has not had much racing, and should not be discredited for the failure. Tray Bit was Sent out to contest the race, but lie collided with one of the guard rails while doing his preliminary, and was withdrawn. His rider, A. Tinker, received a broken collarbone. A Fine Win. Owing to the injury to A. Tinker. L. Dulieu secured the mount on Kiltowyn in the Takapuna Jockey Club Handicap and rode him to a fine win. Kiltowyn was a good favourite and never gave his supporters much cause for uneasiness. After pulling hard early, behind Sinking Fund, he followed Caliente and Sinking Fund into the straight, Prolyxo being alongside him. Kiltowyn forced his way' through below the distance and went on sol:dly_under pressure to win nicely from Caliente, who battled on in good style after being taken to the front seven furlongs from home. Monanui came from the rear to get third, but Sinking Fund and Prolyxo both fired in the run home. Prince Colossus failed to run up to foilu and appears to be feeling the hard ground. Parquet was the favourite for the Hobson Handicap, and duly won after being
first away from n!>. 2. She dropped in behind Application and Armacourt to come through in the straight and score nicely by about a length from Velocipede, who finished on solidly. Flood Tide was staying on at the end. but the others were well beaten, Application tiring badly in tae last furlong. Victory for Favourite. The each way favourite, King Musk, scored a well-deserved victory in the llacraki Plate. He was just behind Lionheart, Crooning and .Scotland at the home turn, and took charge immediately they straightened up to win all out by a length from Scotland, who ran another honest race. On Parade finished solidly to get third, but was not quite good enough for the two who defeated him. King Iley did best of the others to get fourth, the .pacemakers, Crooning and Lionheart, tiring in the last furlong. King Musk and Scotland have performed consistently well in races of this description during the season, and there is not a great deal between them at seven furlongs and a mile. King Musk is the better stayer, and should be a possibility for a middle distance handicap at the coming meetings. His victory was his first since he scored at Ellerslie last June. Another Favourite Scores. Coronis was an each way favourite for the Devonport Handicap, and duly scored. She was first away, to be joined early by Sirona. They were always iu front and Coronis, splendidly handled by K. Voitre, did the better in the last 50 yards to win by a neck. King’s Archer, who did not jump out too well, finished on to get third, a length away, just beating British Columbia, who tired near the end. The first and second horses are fullsisters, and both have improved lately, especially Coronis. Led Throughout. Maine, Scotch Nation and Barn Dance were the favourites for the Anniversary Hack Handicap, and the only one to return a dividend was Barn Dance, who led throughout. A furlong from the post Tuaheahe anil King Mester appeared likely to trouble Barn Dance, but he was going away at the end to win by two lengths from Tuaheahe. who heat King Mestor by a head. Maine again failed to act up to expectations, and was only a moderate fourth. Details of Racing By Telegraph—Press Association. MOANA MAIDEN HANDICAP, of £lOO. TRAINING AT WANGANUI By Telegraph—Press Association. Wanganui, January 29. • The weather was tine for training operations this morning, but little work of importance was done. Arrivals include Tiger Gain, Queen’s Pride, Flamingo, and Speed. The last named looks very fit, but was restricted to pace work, as were also Queen’s Pride and Flamingo. The track , was in good order. i Tiger Gain ran six furlongs in Imin. ISsec. Queanbeyan and Cynola went six furlongs in Imin. ISsec. The first halfmile took 50 l-ssee. Rust and Pomp went six furlongs in Imin. 17 l-ssec., the former doing it nicely. Midian finished three lengths in front of Dawn Princess after five furlongs run in Imin. 3sec. Amante went half a mile in 521 sec., and Minos took 52sec, Useful work was done by Colenso, Debut, Reipar, and a number of others. Hot Stuff stopped so quickly, about half a mile from home, in the highweight event at Trentham on Saturday that his rider pulled him up, under the impression that the horse had broken down. It was found afterward that he hail ricked a knee and though there was little evidence of trouble when he walked back to the birdcage, his trainer intends to treat his charge to a light blister.
