“Strad” Violins

Sir, —If the distinctiofi apparently accorded a “Strad” violin is based on its merit or superiority as a musical instrument, why is there such difficulty in deciding whether or not a given violin is a genuine “Strad”? Also, if it really were the practice of Stradivarius to conceal a label within the instrument, why should he have inscribed it “S. Faciebat, 1730,” ami not “S. Fecit, 1730”? If the subject has not already become tiresome to you or your readers, I should be grateful if some further light in the above respect were thrown on the matter. —I am, etc., ORA OCCIDENS. Westport, January 24.
