DIRT-TRACK RACING
Wellington Season Opens February 9 Interest taken in the revival of dirttrack racing in Wellington was shown by an attendance of some 500 spectators at the Kilbirnie Stadium on Monday night, when about 17 riders took part in trial lAces. Among the riders were C. Tonks, Wilkinson, P. Phillips. D. Phillips, Hetherington. Naylor, Young, Stone, Fitzgerald, McMahon, Mallard, 11. Tonks, Hewson, McLeod, Moulton, Tilly, Appleyard, Corneal and Anderson. The opening night has been fixed for Saturday, February 9. when the management has completed arrangements for the appearance of the Australian test riders, Van Pragg and Dick Case, who have represented Australia in international tests for the past three years. Both were prominent setfrers in the tests recently held in Australia. Case will be making his first appearance in Wellington, while Van Pragg has always given, startling displays on the local track. The programme for the opening night will be a very attractive one. Two teams of local riders of six men a side, representing city and Newtown, will oppose each other. The teams will be picked after the trials to be held on, Thursday night. The track is in excellent order, and the times recorded hi practice have been exceedingly fast for -so early in the season. There is a likelihood of D. Matson, (lie Auckland star, being seen in action on opening night.
