Germany and France (From "The Dominion,” January 27, 1910.) After long reimiiuing sceptical concerning the importance of Germany's aeronautical fleet, the French are now becoming alarmed at what is considered an important advantage on the German side. Several newspapers take it upon themselves to show how greatly the balance of power in steerable balloons rests with Germany. The discovery is causing all lhe greater alarm as France has always considered herself naturally predominant, in aeronautics ever since the early days ot. M. Santos-Dumont’s experiments with steerable balloons. Two reasons are given for the superiority of Germany:—(l) Greater productive power; (2) more important financial aid from the Stare. That Germany possesses superiority in the first respect has been as much a surprise as was the discovery in England that Germany could rival, or outrival. Great Britain in the rapid construction of dreadnoughts. « * * Shortly before six o'clock last, evening a train accident happened opposite rhe General Post Office. Wellington. A hansom cab was going in the direction of Lambton Station and a train in the direction of To Aro Station. Just as they were passing each other the train sounded i's whistle, and the horse, taking fright, backed into the train. Tlie driver wa: thrown from his seat to the ground, and received slight, injuries, having to be removed in a cab to his home. Tlie driver's seat, which is situated at tlie back of the cab. was badly knocked about, and the axle was broken. (Until the war th? railway from the Wairarapa and th" Hutt continued through the streets to T" Aro Station iu Wakefield Street.]
Considerable interest (says our Otaki correspondent) is being displayed in connection with the trip of the party which is to leave Otaki on Friday night for “The Forks.” en route for the Wairiirap-i by way of the Tarawa Ranges. Tire settlers at Otaki Gorge are making full preparations to receive the party as they pass that way. and treat them well. It is, expected that the “explorers” will return' to Otaki on Monday next.
