GREATLY INCREASED
Sanitary Inspectors’ Duties Commendation of the work done by members of the New Zealand Sanitary Inspectors’ Association in promoting healthy living and public hygiene was expressed by the president. Mr. W. G. Gough, in his address at the annual meeting last night. “During the past teu years,” he said, “the Government has greatly increased the powers and duties of local authorities as far as our department is concerned. Our responsibilities are now far-reaching, and the welfare of the community is dependent upon the efficiency with which these responsibilities are discharged. In my opinion these added responsibilities have been laid on the local authorities as a result of our association raising to its present high standard the technical education and qualification of its members. I feel certain that no local body inspector is efficiently carrying out his job' unless he is concerned with the health and welfare of the community tinder his charge far beyond the vajne of the remuneration which he is receiving, or is ever likely to receive, for his services. I believe that members of our association are men of this type.” Delegates representing the whole of the Dominion were present at a meeting of the general councif in the afternoon, when Mr. R. Day (New Plymouth) was elected president and Mr J. Fletcher (Lower Hutt) vice-presi-dent. Representatives elected to the executive of the Royal Sanitary Institute were Mr. J. Fletcher and Mr. IV. B. Gough. The advisability of having inspectors holding full qualifications appointed sanitary inspectors was discussed, and the association decided to urge the Royal Sanitary Institute to appoint a representative on the examining board in order to tighten up the examination of candidates, with particular attention to sanitary engineering.
