NEW COLLEGE WING
Wellington Technical Additions BOARD RECEIVES PLANS Plans for the proposed new £20,000 wing for the Wellington Technical College were received by the Board of Governors last night. The design, which is the work of Messrs. John L. Swan and W. Gray Young, joint architects, provides for an auditorium (assembly hall) located over the gymnasium and a complete home science block. Strong objection to the use of steel window frames was made by several members-' The chairman, Mr. W. H. Bennett, said these had been a failure wherever they had been employed. Mr. T. Forsyth described trouble the Education Board had experienced at schools where steel-frame windows had been installed. A member said the latest kind of steel frame windows were galvanised and were provided with extra lap, preventing deterioration by the weather and the entry of rain. Mr. A. C. Blake moved that wooden sasbes be insisted upon by the building committee. Mr. J. P. Luke said it was doubtful if such a motion could be passed by the board. Mr. Blake: Well, we will put it in the- form of a recommendation. The motion, amended accordingly, was agreed to, the committee being asked to consider the merits of steel, bronze and wooden sashes. The plans were referred to the committee with a view to their inspection and later submission to the Education Department for approval.
